Creating a Prayerful Space in Your Day

Create Silence

Two years ago, I'd wake up by my radio alarm clock then listen to the radio or play CD's at work all day. The radio was on again when I drove home. At 5:30 the TV came on, and stayed on for at least two hours.

One day as I was listening to a song on the radio that I had heard over and over again, I wondered why I was listening to this song. Why was I listening to these songs that really have no connection to me? Why do I need to listen to Jack and Fred, those wonderful "radio personalities" every morning? Yes, they're funny, but then I also listen to all those ads. So, I turned the radio off. Silence. At that moment a new dynamic entered my life.

Now, the radio is almost never on in my house or car. There is no music at work. Instead I have peaceful silence. Driving is more relaxing. The TV is still on for a while in the evening, but more and more, my husband and I enjoy reading or puttering. We get our weather forecast from the official radio weather advisory station.

Our information-filled world bombards us with stimulus continually. Telephone marketers and the Internet invade ours home if we allow them to. Psychologists explain that we have a need to download and decompress after receiving excessive input. The absence of silence inhibits that process. Unless we have the quiet time to get past all of the noise in our heads, we literally "can't hear ourselves think." We can't get to who we are; we can't know ourselves. We're not able to process our own emotions.

Here are some other ways to create silence:

• Take a daily walk by yourself on a quiet road or at a quiet time.
• When you come home alone after dark, stand outside for a while and watch the stars. Bring binoculars.
• When you find yourself all alone, unexpectedly, sit down and relax for a few minutes.
• Bring a sack lunch and eat in the park.
• Bring a blanket to sit on the ground so you can get out of the car.
• Then take a walk around the park.
• Play with your dog or cat.
• Run outside with them like a kid.
• Make a small fun garden.
• Screen your phone calls.
• Don't think you have to listen to telemarketers. Just Say No, and without waiting for a reply, hang up.
• Go for a short walk at noon lunch.
• Plan a Saturday morning get-away to your library, regularly.
• Have I mentioned take a walk?
