It is too easy for life to become excessively busy. We put ourselves on autopilot in the morning, and at the end of the day, we're not quite sure what we've accomplished. Instead of living 'by default', try to build some 'conscious' time into your day.

Slow it down and bring in some silence. Maybe we can't always be in control of our day, but at least we can create an awareness that can bring us enjoyment and satisfaction. Maybe we'll develop a space in which we can hear God.

Slow it Down

Most busy people get lots of advice. Delegate, get up earlier, reduce stress, increase your capacity for stress, learn time-management, yada yada yada. (Why would I want to INCREASE my capacity for stress?) Let's think revolutionary!

Did you know that since 1948, the level of productivity of the US worker has more than doubled? (Economist Juliet Schor) So why are we so busy?

The truth for most of us is that we don't have to be. We choose to be. For those few of you who believe me, who accept responsibility for your own actions, who do not use the alcoholic's excuse of "I wasn't in control because I was drunk," read on.

With the possible exception of mothers of multiple young children, I believe you can choose to slow down. The side affects will include doing less, being calmer, thinking more clearly, and being able to breathe. You're still ahead of those 1948 slowpokes. Here are some very scary places to start. These actions might just liberate you:

• Drive in the slow lane, just once.
• Get in the long line, just once.
• Don't watch the elevator light move closer to your floor.
• For God's sake, don't push the 'up' button if it's already lit!
• Let someone else go first.
• Open the door for someone else.
• Take the stairs.
• Park at the other end of the parking lot.
• If you have three errands on one street, park and walk.
• Talk to your co-worker in person, instead of by email.
• Write a letter longhand. Put a stamp on it and mail it.
• Look into your child's eyes and listen when she talks to you.
• Sit down with your family and play a board game.
• Do nothing for one hour.

Paths began to beckon Theresa when she was 12, visiting the Bridger Wilderness in Wyoming. Walking, dancing, and movement are a part of her, nourished by John Denver's musical challenge for her to "fly." She has walked up mountains and through forests in Wyoming, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. She's lived in Germany and has traveled extensively in Europe, even leading a pilgrimage. Her recent walks in the Grand Canyon and Alaska inspired her to begin her dream business of "walking with women." Women Summit
