Pets, like people, can become diabetic, and as with humans, age and weight seem to play a definite part in the development of this often serious disease. As a responsible owner, you are the one most likely to notice when something is wrong with your pet ... and prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential to the satisfactory management of this malady. Management is the operative word in dealing with diabetes. The symptoms can be managed and treated. Diabetes itself cannot be cured.
Diabetes, the common term for Diabetes mellitus, is a disorder in which the body is unable to regulate its blood sugar levels because of abnormalities in insulin production. Insulin is both a protein and a hormone produced by the pancreas, a small abdominal organ, which plays a key role in the control of blood sugar levels and the body's ability to use and store glucose.
Glucose itself is a source of energy for the body's cells. It circulates in the blood where it is available for use, but to be converted into energy, glucose must move from the blood into the cell itself. The role of insulin in this process of feeding the body's cells is fundamental. Insulin is like a chemical key that attaches itself to receptors on the cell, thus facilitating the transfer of glucose from the bloodstream into the cell's interior to provide nourishment.
Without insulin to facilitate this process, glucose cannot feed the cell ... and even with high levels of glucose in the blood, the cells begin to starve. In order to preserve itself in what it erroneously deems to be starvation conditions, the body will begin to break down its fat and protein stores to fill the need for energy sources.
Because food is not being used properly, and because its body is trying to supply itself with additional energy, a diabetic animal will seem constantly hungry, will be eating more, and yet will also be losing weight.
The malfunctioning body must still eliminate the excess of blood glucose, however, which it does by filtering it out through the kidneys, into the urine, where it then can be moved out of the body. Sufficient water is needed for this process, and excessive urine volume is another symptom of diabetes. Fluid lost through urination, of course, must be replaced to prevent dehydration ... and thus a diabetic animal is also excessively, constantly thirsty, and may be always at the water.
Either of these symptoms in your pet is a signal of potential trouble. You should consult your veterinarian at once for advice on your pet's condition and possible treatment.
There are, in fact, different types of diabetes.
Type I -- is characterized by decreased insulin production ... and always requires outside insulin, usually by injection, to manage it.
Type II -- is characterized by a decreased responsiveness of the body's cells to insulin. This may be either insulin dependent (requiring outside insulin) or non-insulin dependent (indicating the possibility of management through a monitored and special diet.)
Transient Diabetes -- where the need for outside insulin comes and goes.
Both dogs and cats will exhibit insulin-dependent and non-insulin-dependent diabetes ... although most diabetic dogs will be insulin dependent. Approximately 20% of diabetic cats may have transient diabetes, experiencing periods where outside insulin is not needed for weeks, even months, only to have the need for insulin recur.
Further symptoms of diabetes include lethargy, and as the disease progresses, loss of appetite, depression, and vomiting. In dogs, diabetes causes the rapid development of cataracts. Thus, dogs with diabetes will suddenly go blind, and tragically that may be an inattentive owner's first indication that his pet is ill.
Cats with diabetes will exhibit weakness in the hind legs, a condition known as diabetic neuropathy, and a diabetic cat may walk on its hocks as a result of this.
Diabetes occurs in about 1 in every 400-500 dogs and cats. Most cats are over 6 years old at the onset of the disease; 75% are between 8 and 13 years old. Most dogs are between 7 and 9 years old. Diabetes is uncommon in very young cats and dogs ... but not unknown.
Neutered male cats and un-spayed female dogs seem to be at a greater risk for developing the disease. Breed seems not to make a difference in cats. In dogs, keeshond, miniature pinscher, and cairn terriers appear to have a genetic predisposition to diabetes. Poodle, dachshund, miniature schnauzer, and beagle are possibly also at high risk.
Obesity is a risk factor for developing Type II diabetes in both dogs and cats.
Tests by your veterinarian are necessary to determine whether or not your pet has become diabetic ... but keeping a close eye out for the symptoms described earlier in this article lets you as the pet's owner play a significant role in maintaining a good quality of life for the four-footed fur folks who may be among your best friends.
