I bolted upright in my bed, suddenly sitting up straight from a deep slumber. Blinking, I looked at the red, neon numbers on my clock announcing to my somewhat conscious self that it was 2:14 AM.

With great excitement I scribbled down the details of the thunderbolt idea that awakened me in the notebook I keep on my night stand. Contentedly smiling, I snuggled into my fluffy pillow and immediately returned to blissful sleep.

This morning dawned bright and clear. I went about my normal morning activities, ushering my family into another possibility filled day. I was ready to put into action the momentous plan that came to me the night before as I slept.

Amazingly, it was just yesterday that nothing seemed possible.

With nearly six months of hardly working at all....six months tending to my family and the special challenges I was facing there.....I felt as if I was ready to chuck it all.

Sure, I had built my business, my name and reputation before. Did any of that matter anymore? I mean, I had been practically catatonic business wise for the past two seasons. It would be like the quarterback lying down in the middle of the field for entire second and third quarter! How on Earth could I pick up the ball in the fourth quarter and expect to win?

On the other hand, how could I not?

Sure, there were a lot of folks out there just waiting to say "I told you so!" The people I used to work with at the County....the ones who watched in amazement as I left a cushy job with benefits galore to follow my passion to success in no time flat.

There were even people close to me who still did not quite "get it". I mean, they did not understand what is was that had transformed me into a different person.

I remembered briefly a telephone conversation I had a while back with my college friend, Mel. She said, "You sound like YOU again!"

As I fell asleep just as I had countless nights before, I did not realize that in that slumber, all that I had worked and grown towards was about to birth something even greater than I had ever imagined.

Reviewing my day, I contentedly recalled a conversation with my sweet four year old daughter, Emma. I had been trying to teach her a very important lesson this week.

You see, before this crucial flash of understanding, Emma got scared whenever people raised their voice at her. She would literally jump out of her skin and her eyes would get rounder than saucers. The tears of sadness or the fury of anger would follow in the blink of an eye.

Emma looked at me, smiling a soft smile of recognition.

"Mommy, when you get angry at me, you still love me very much."

Have you ever had an accomplishment that was so huge you wanted to run around the neighborhood screaming "I DID IT! I DID IT! I DID IT!" at the top of your lungs?

When Emma made that simple statement:

"Mommy, when you get angry at me, you still love me very much."

I was ready to dance around the entire state of California.....wait! Make that North America.....hold on, how about the GLOBE! rejoicing that EMMA GOT IT!

It only took her 4 years to learn what it took me close to 40 years to learn.

When I woke up from my deep slumber that was when I knew. Returning to full speed with my business, honoring my vision and my current life, was the best way to stand strong and firm in the place of love. THIS is where we can achieve all our dreams.

It's when I was so angry at myself, at the situation, at the world, that I could not seem to do anything right!

I was looking at everything from an either/or perspective.

I was subtly telling myself that I could not live the life of my dreams, that it had been a fun journey and it would just not work after all.

Have you ever felt that way? Woke up and a week, a month, a year a decade had passed and somehow all you meant to do had not happened? It made my stomach get woozy. Very uncomfortable.

When I woke up suddenly at 2:14 AM I had a renewed vision, scribbled the beginnings of my new plan and was delighted to remember that life is gloriously filled with second and third and eighty seventh chances. AND I trusted that scribbling down my basics would capture it. That I could continue to sleep and perhaps be bubbling over with even more when I awakened!

I had turned over the power to love and taken the power away from anger and disappointment.

Naturally the message came to me at precisely 2:14....the numerical day for Valentine's Day...the Day of Love.

Like my wise 4 year old daughter advised, "I can be angry AND I can still love ME anyway". AND I can love my vision. AND I can continue along my passionate path AND I can pursue my dreams.

AND so can you. Starting here, starting now, no matter where your starting place is. Because no matter where it is, it is absolutely perfect.
