Every child is an artist.
The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.

~ Pablo Picasso ~

You were born a creative spirit. Mystics and metaphysicians hold that your own creativity is what brought you into being. A lighter-hearted, but no less valid, belief is that you came here to express and experience your own creativity. One spiritual teacher after another says ... over and over again : Human beings, you -- me -- all of us, are the otters of the universe. Part of being fashioned in God's image is the ability to consciously know, enjoy, and direct the use of our own creative talents. It's a mighty marvelous gift.

Children are masters of creative expression, able to pretend, to envision, to construct entire other worlds in their imaginations and populate it with characters and playmates, and draw their real life friends into the drama.

Remember when you did that ... and how it was more fun than anything television will ever devise? (In fact, television was just one source of raw material for new ideas ... 'cause I remember how the dramas ran on with scripts of my own devising long after the set got turned off. Sometimes even long after the series ended!)

I think we can safely assume no adult taught you how to play "make believe" with nearly the force and concentration that they eventually hammered spelling lessons or algebra equations at you. Probably adults didn't even believe in your imaginary companions ... and weren't terribly keen on your insisting on them, either. But nevertheless they were real to you, and sometimes more comforting (and scary) than anything you saw outside the realm of your imagination.

Anyway, my point is ... once upon a time, you knew how to create. It was how you lived your life. It was what you did with your time and energy. If you managed to sufficiently resist the oppressive efforts of the public education that was inflicted on you, you retained at least enough of this diamond-in-the-rough ability to work with it again easily.

Perhaps you were lucky enough not to have your creative zest hammered out of you by disapproving adults and life's crueler twists. If you were extremely fortunate, your creative adventures were encouraged -- and maybe those are still essential working parts of the person you are today. If so, congratulations. You've preserved something truly fine, something you deserve to have, and something you can use to make your life an ever-renewing joy.

But if you're like a lot of people, you will have to re-engage with your creative self, learn to nourish it, and break the habits of neglect you've used on this precious part of yourself ... possibly for decades. Your strong desire to resurrect this creative center of your spirit is essential. Consider that you may never find something you're not looking for, and you will certainly get farther by working deliberately to know, cherish, and amplify the creative fire that is uniquely yours.

Creativity and its dynamic processes apply to everything from artistic projects to innovative solutions to problems you face every day. Realize that creativity is simply the inventive spirit, backed by the necessary physical effort, to produce something that doesn't exist at the moment. To do that, in whatever way you apply it, and whatever results you fashion, is to create.

Artistic ideas are all around you if that's where your creative impulses lie ... in the picture you want to paint, the figure you want to sculpt, the collage you want to build, the photograph you want to take, the poem you want to write, the recipe you want to perfect, the flowers you want to arrange, the room you want to decorate. But creativity also springs into action when you need to cross an obstacle that keeps you from enjoying or moving forward with your life as you wish.

Creativity is found in unique but highly workable solutions to relationship quandaries, to problems you need to solve, and to the lack of assets or resources you may need ... and don't yet possess. Some of my own most creative moments come when I realize that what I'm looking for -- doesn't yet exist in the form I want it to have, and in that realization is the germ of my next project ... to craft whatever it is I need that no one else has done yet to my satisfaction.

One of the most valuable lessons in creativity I ever received came from my work with the Tarot -- and my understanding of the symbolism and energy of The Hanged Man, one of the cards in the Major Arcana of that ever-delightful occult tool. The Hanged Man is literally in limbo, hanging upside down -- in order to look at life from an out-of-the-ordinary perspective. The message in this wonderful bit of symbolism has taught me to turn problems inside out ... in search of solutions.

What feature exactly makes something a problem? Is there a way to turn the liability into an asset instead? If I'm hesitant or uneasy about a certain path, what really am I feeling -- and objecting to? Is there a way to solve that?

What if? are perhaps the most wonderful words in the creator's arsenal. Are there circumstances under which the problem is no longer a problem ... and what does it take to bring those into being? If you learn to look at "challenges" as opportunities to test, strengthen, or fine-tune your creativity, something magic happens. You stop having so many "problems" ... and start having adventures in creative effort.

Now granted, some problems are not nearly so light-hearted when you have to live with and solve them. I don't mean to be flip or insensitive about life's more difficult distresses, but they respond to basically the same steps and procedures as any other problem you will face. And knowing how to habitually work creatively with the small stuff in life puts you miles ahead on handling the bigger issues when they show up -- as they most certainly will in time. if something can be done, knowing how to find the way is a tremendous advantage in a crisis.

Limbering up your mind, and being able to offer a versatile response is invaluable in troubled times. When you break out of the rut of everyday thinking, when you grow beyond the common response, and see the world with new eyes, you will not only think in different channels, but the world itself will change. You don't have to cobble up great art ... although you certainly can. There's nothing stopping you. All you have to be ... is artfully yourself.

If you think I'm kidding ... try it. You have 1440 minutes a day, today, tomorrow, and every day from now on to prove it to yourself.
