What I'm about to suggest is almost certainly an idea that exists in other forms and practices -- maybe even the same form I put together for myself years ago that resulted in the creation I call "God's Mailbox."

God's Mailbox is a beautiful wooden box with a ceramic tile top that sits on my dresser and receives requests for help, guidance, ideas, and sometimes outright miracles when I've finally reached the point in a problem where I decide God's going to have to step in and lend a hand because I'm flat out of energy and inspiration for dealing with whatever's going on.

Now, maybe I ought to get fed up a little earlier in the game, because I have no reason to think I have to be worn to a frazzle before God will listen -- or help -- but I've got too much fire energy in my character and maybe too much stubbornness in my soul not to wrestle some challenge down to at least a Mexican standoff before drawing a deep breath and "taking the easy way out." There are times I'd agree with the suggestion that I'm a glutton for punishment that way.

God's Mailbox is an idea born decades ago when my younger self found some of life's scarier grown-up problems truly terrifying ... and I've pulled it back into service from time to time when that Mexican standoff I mentioned is both exhausting and "the best I can manage" in trying to solve a problem that for sure needs a better resolution that what's arrived so far.

In a grimly humorous moment of confronting a crisis I don't even remember now, I thought to myself, "Maybe I ought to write Him a letter" ... Him, of course, being God ... because my occasional muttering to Him about the aggravations I faced didn't seem to be catching His ear ... or Him in an obliging mood. It was one of those half-silly episodes of, "Well, shoot, what have you got to lose?" when I heard what I'd said ... and the idea of God's mailbox was born.

God's mailbox can be anything. A shoebox, a canister, even an envelope that you put back in the drawer with its contents inside ... or just folding the paper over and tucking it away. That probably would work, too.

The text of the letter can also be anything. A prayer, a request, a question, or even a description of your problem with a statement that you would like some help at the end. The "magic" seems to be in focusing your request enough to put it in writing and aiming the intent of it at some power wiser and greater than your conscious self.

Maybe it's your own Higher Self that answers. Maybe it's really God. Maybe they're part of the same thing. The message of this article is not to get lost in the theology of the exercise, but to do it ... and then watch for the answers you need -- because they will arrive.

In a sudden idea, a whispered message from that voice you use to talk to yourself, in a piece of advice from someone you trust, in a sudden and relevant message on a billboard display or a line in a magazine article. Maybe it's a remark from a character in a TV drama, or a jingle from a commercial -- or the lyrics of a song.

Wisdom is where you find it ... and messages are everywhere. When something seems to answer your prayer enough to catch your attention ... listen to what it's telling you. Note the answer well.

I'm told you can put a time limit on your patience in waiting for an answer. (As in, "Universe, I want the answer in three days, please.") I've found it usually doesn't take that long. Sometimes in minutes a breakthrough will come ... in the form of new ideas, new information, or maybe just a new attitude and a willingness to let things play out to the point you see better, or acceptable, ways to respond.

Sometimes just a smidgen of guidance and a cosmic vote of confidence that you're moving in a good direction can be a marvelous boost to your flagging morale. But usually the answer to your prayer brings a whole lot more ... so don't limit yourself or your benefits.

Don't be afraid to ask for miracles ... and be willing to accept and expect them. (You have to also be willing to hear an answer you don't especially want ... or that shows you other problems you need to face in order to get this one out of the way.)

If you're in a place where you don't even know the right question to ask ... make that your question: "What is the most important thing I need to know or do in order to make progress in my life?" Make that your letter to God.

I write my letters to God on 3x5 index cards and keep them, as I said, in a box on my dresser ... but, again, form and even place are not important. Writing the letter is important. Try to keep it concise, but make it as long as it needs to be. If you have more than one issue, write each in a separate letter. That seems to be important, too.

What is the biggest dilemma, question, problem, quandary, or injury you face in your life at the moment? What in your world needs help ... or an answer? Write a letter to God as I've described it here ... and then, literally, see what happens. As I said to myself all those years ago in my moment of grumpy exasperation, "What have you got to lose?"
