Long ago, our connection to the components of our planet ... our physical habitat ... was considered intimate and sacred. The Earth wasn't seen as just a convenient building environment ... a place of infinite raw materials to use, exploit, or waste ... whatever was easiest to do.

The energy of the mineral kingdom was respected as dynamic, powerful, and vital ... although different from that found in plants, animals, and human beings. Rocks, gemstones, crystals, and minerals weren't seen as lifeless, inert, insignificant.

Through the channels of intuition which were once humankind's greatest teacher, precious and important knowledge became available about the astounding, significant energies held by various minerals on our planet ... and ways in which these assets can help keep us integrated, healthy, and in tune with our essential selves.

Even though through development and the dubious progress of civilization, humankind has lost much of its connection to the earth and its vibrations, it is still possible to cultivate -- and feel -- the enormous natural healing powers that exist all around us.

Indigenous cultures scattered about the planet ... and isolated (possibly the word "protected" has application here) from the values, effects, attitudes, and stresses of the modern world ... have continued the ancient tradition of centering their cultural and spiritual awareness around the natural elements with which and within which they coexist.

Today, they are largely responsible for maintaining and advancing the healing practices and healing wisdom accessible through the use of raw minerals and stones as an accessory to spiritual awareness and physical life.

The return of more environmental awareness, a greater respect for ancient traditions, and more prominently featured ideas from the "primitive" earth-based spiritual philosophies in mainstream thought is helping re-establish our connections into the natural world -- although we arguably have a long way to go ... and / or a lot of catching up to do.

Many spiritual seekers today feel a longing, not easily expressed in words, for reconnection to those long-neglected and mysterious regions of our being and our power, more awareness, more exploration, more knowledge of the mystical secrets that were once an indispensable part of daily life.

The desire to live "in flow" with nature rather than treat it as a wild force to be harnessed, a raw resource to be tamed or controlled or put to work for our benefit, (how arrogant is that??) ... is becoming more and more a prominent and desirable way to approach existence itself. Meditation practices and many private spiritual rituals are part of this effort. The use of feng shui to restructure and shape our environments ... is part of this effort. And the re-honoring of the blessings the mineral kingdom can provide for us ... is part of that effort.

Just as plants and animals have DNA, stones, gems, and crystals are formed with very specific atomic properties, individual characteristics and structures. Through these, they have the ability to direct and channel energy ... to do work and serve the purposes to which we put them.

Scientists and engineers have worked with (and known about) the properties of crystals by which they direct energy. Almost certainly, a quartz crystal inside your watch helps it keep time. The original laser prototypes used rubies to direct energy.

Who knows what wonderful secrets the mineral kingdom may still reveal, but those who work closely with gems, crystals, and mineral energy assure us these future blessings and discoveries are virtually certain. It becomes more likely these benefits will reveal themselves as mankind grows in awareness that we ... and the earth ... are inextricably linked -- and that we are here to operate in harmony with one another.
