Is EQ Just for the Girls?
Napoleon Didn't Think So

As we continue to learn more about Emotional Intelligence, a field dubbed by the press as "white hot," many people have questions about the appropriateness of emotions, particularly in the workplace. It seems a natural with relationships and home life, but where does it fit in when you're working?

Does this mean, you might be wondering, that we'll be hearing "Hug Time" over the loudspeaker at work? Not that that's a bad thing. I was absolutely amazed to hear "Associates Group Hug, Aisle 14. All Associates come to Aisle 14," over the loudspeaker at a Dallas Wal-Mart the other day.

I was one of the first customers in the door. Maybe it's the way they start their day. Hopefully, it's included as the day goes on and associates become more stressed and more tired.

So, having thrown in the "not that there's anything wrong with that" statement, which will remain in our conversations until we make the full paradigm shift, I'll proceed to another look at applications of Emotional Intelligence.

Do emotions belong in the workplace? How about this -- Do they belong on the battlefield? How about the Emperor of France, Napoleon Bonaparte? Quite a leader he was, and he did his work, as all leaders do, with people. There is nothing else to do your work with, no other way to accomplish things, no other way to get a project off the ground.

You'll recall from History 101 what finally defeated him was the Russian winter, so ... he was motivating men to fight, and possibly die, under the worst conditions, and he did it with words and through appeals to their emotions.

"It is as necessary for the heart to feel as for the body to be fed," he said, and he went right for it. If we change the word "prince" to "leader" and change "nation" to "business," we have the prescription for Primal Leadership in his writings.

Here are some of the things he wrote:

1. Nothing goes well in a [business] system in which words are in contradiction to facts.

EQ competency: Authenticity and truth-telling; Integrated Self

2. A [Leader] is always wrong who speaks in anger.

EQ competency: Self-management, conflict resolution skills

3. None but indolent [Leaders] grow fat in their palaces.

EQ competency: Modeling, participating, being present, active and visible; Authenticity and Integrated Self

4. Respect the people you deliver.

EQ competency: You will claim as much respect as you give to others.

5. The best policy is simplicity and truth.

EQ competency: Authenticity

6. A [Leader] must speak to the eyes. It does well with the people.

EQ competency: Over 90% of the message is accomplished through nonverbal means. Top-notch communication skills demand that you be in control of your nonverbal behavior as well as your verbal.

7. In [business], there is a wide difference between promises and performance.

EQ competency: Authenticity, Integrated Self.

8. To conduct [business] both internally and to the public, deep thought, profound analysis, and the faculty of unwearied attention are necessary.

EQ competency: Intentionality. Saying what you mean and meaning what you say, and doing what you say you will require focus, determination and self-management.

8. You cannot treat with all the world at one.

EQ competency: Intentionaltity. Being able to focus and screen out distractions that don't further your goal, be they people, emotions, things, or events.

9. Speeches pass away, but acts remain.

EQ competency: Intentionality, Authenticity. Others are watching to see if you do what you say you will, and if you mean what you say. With leadership, nothing matters more than self-management, backing up what you say with actions.

And as to inspiring the troops, something you must do daily, when was the last time you raised them to a higher calling. Before the Battle of the Pyramids, July 2, 1797, Napoleon addressed his army with, "Soldiers, forty centuries are looking down upon you from these pyramids." You DO address your troops before battle, don't you?

Find anything useful here? These all relate to Emotional Intelligence competencies -- from bothering to address those who work for you, with good eye contact, to keeping your priorities, to maintaining your Intentionality, to doing what you want others to do. In order to get work done, you must motivate, and motivation, they say, is not a thinking word.
