Romance is wonderful. Everyone should have a healthy dose of it as part of their daily life. In fact, romance is what many people mean when they talk about love. In time, however, most of us learn there are more dimensions to love than romance.

Some of those other dimensions are deeper and more complex than the heady walking-on-clouds feeling of romance ... and "being in love." And some of those dimensions require a lot more conscious decision and deeper commitment than just enjoying the moonlight and roses. Supporting a partner ... or staying with a relationship ... though difficult times is also a part of love. That's why the same marriage vows that talk about "for better" ... also talk about "for worse."

Still, relationships and marriages that manage to last are usually those that also managed to "keep the love alive." That means the romantic side of love ... and that is most assuredly a two way street. One person alone simply cannot handle the load -- and the responsibility. Nor should one person be expected to.

It's easy to get lost in the daily clutter of work, kids, errands, housekeeping chores, and just keeping the bills paid. But there are many ways to keep the romance between you and your partner alive and thriving. Some of the most basic are simple, quick, and even free. If you care about yourself and your partner, you'd be wise to work these in every day ... as well as making sure the cleaning gets picked up, the trash taken out, and the insurance check dropped in the mail.

Here are some ideas ... and do feel free to add your own, because your relationship is special, unique, and deserves the touch of your own loving routines and attention:

Say "I love you." Say it a lot. Your lover needs to hear the words. This is not the place to be coy or stingy -- assuming those qualities have a legitimate place at all in anybody's life.

Kiss hello and good-bye. And always give lots of hugs. People need hugs in order to thrive. They need more hugs in order to grow. Babies that are not held, cuddled, and touched ... will die. "Big babies" -- and that means every one of us (!!!) -- still need the skin-to-skin contact of human touch.

Go on dates. Even if it's just for a walk in the park, a drive in the country, window-shopping at the mall, or to a place where you can watch the sunset together. Hold hands. Don't deal with touchy or difficult subjects ... for just this little while. Simply appreciate the wonderful gift of having this other person in your life.

Ignore what doesn't matter. Does he leave hair in the bathroom basin? Does she drape her pantyhose over the shower-curtain rod? If this is a big problem in your life, stop right where you are and give thanks!! Remember, there are millions of people who would give everything they own to have their loved one back ... causing this kind of aggravation again.

Remember what attracted you in the first place ... and why you married this person. Do those qualities still exist? Then celebrate them, and let them minimize the things that really get under your skin now. If they don't exist any longer, try to revive them. Your partner needs to know what you like about him or her ... at least as much and as often as your complaints.

Be careful what you say in anger. Three things can never be recalled. The fired bullet, the lost opportunity, the hateful, hurtful word. All three can be tragic and deadly.

Deserve your partner's trust. Don't reveal his painful secrets. Don't talk about her behind her back. Don't make fun of him in public. Don't blab about her business and foibles to people who have no business knowing these private things. Being someone's partner gives you certain responsibilities. Respect this special and private relationship.

Make your partner your priority. Put his or her needs right alongside your own. Say "Yes" as often as possible. Keep your promises. Put yourself in his or her place ... and look at life from that point of view.

Remember ... the two of you are a team. It doesn't matter who scores the points as long as the team wins.

Spend quality time together every day, if possible. Meet for lunch. Go for a walk after supper. Curl up on the couch together while you watch TV. Read to one another. Go to bed early so you can have time to talk and cuddle. Listen to music while you fall asleep. Talk about your goals and dreams. Know who your partner is ... because he or she is always changing. Know what's important in his or her life ... and stay current on what's going on there. Keep the feeling of "us" replenished, flourishing, and vital.
