It isn?t original to me, the statement that motivation isn?t a thinking-thing, it?s a feelings-thing. I think we all "know" this underneath -- how else would we get through the ordeal of the first 3 months of an infant?s life except for parental love?

I was reminded of this recently when I read an article by Jan Jarboe Russell, which ended: "There is a trend in medicine to substitute computer-simulated bodies for cadavers to teach anatomy to medical students. This move away from the body toward technology is unfortunate. A computer can't rouse a doctor from sleep. It takes a human connection for that."

What she?s talking about it Gross Anatomy.

Jan?s married to a physician. I was married to a physician. Physicians and their wives know all about "Gross Anat".

Jan was writing about a project touring the nation conceived by Meryl Levin, a documentary photographer who wanted to know how doctors learned that "doctor thing."

What is she talking about? "Night after night," wrote Jarboe, "the telephone rings, shattering the silence, and my husband, a doctor, wakes with a start. Even in the dark, I see him pacing the floor, picturing the patient who needs him. He is wide awake, completely in the doctor's zone: raw, alert, mentally riveted, ready to act."

My ex-husband could go from dead drunk to stone-cold sober in one second when that phone rang. I saw him function for hours with neither sleep nor food. It wasn?t energy, it was some kind of super-human stamina ... and the ability to focus, instantly. Yes, "riveted" is a good word.

Some of us function poorly when we?re tired, hungry, cold, in pain, or upset. Doctors don?t have that luxury.

Meryl Levin interviewed young physicians and asked them where they learned to do that "doctor thing," and they replied -- to a physician -- "gross anatomy lab."

Levin's project, currently touring the nation, is a series of photographs and the writings of 12 first-year medical students that chronicles a semester of gross anatomy.

According to Jarboe, "The sign over most anatomy labs in the nation says in Latin: The dead teach the living." This exhibit, she says, "reveals the intensity of that centuries-old process."

I connect the dots somewhat differently, but then I?m an EQ coach. I study affective neuroscience, and have known doctors up close and personal. I think the "doctor thing," the potential for it, was there long before Gross Anatomy. In fact were it not there, they?d never get through Gross Anatomy.

What it takes to be able to think under pressure --for that?s what doctoring is -- is to have tight control over your "brains."
