6. Be real.

What does this mean? Don't be like a robot up there. Be present in the body as well as the spirit. If something happens, react to it in the moment. Your audience will be, and they'll stay with you if you're fully present.

7. Plan for the introverts as well as the extroverts.

Extroverts prefer group activities, moving around, talking out their thoughts, lots of noise. Introverts like to sit in the same place, respond in their own way at their own pace, and generally prefer to listen, work alone, read, or work one-on-one, quietly.

8. Use your voice.

Play it like the instrument it is. Don't just say words, practice until you know all about rhythm, pacing, and intonation. Slow down when you're coming to something you want them to 'get.'

Emphasize the important points. When you're introducing something startling or controversial, soften your voice and become quizzical. When you want them to 'buy into' something, get chatty, conversational even conspiratorial. Change your voice all the time, i.e., USE it.

9. Know your audience, their town, and their news.

If you're speaking in Seattle, as I was once, and this close fishing community has just lost 3 fishermen ... inquire. Read the newspaper and listen to the radio when you get to town and get up to speed fast. I always ask the taxi driver, "What's new?"

Also get the pronunciation. It is very jarring here in San Antonio when someone says "San Peee'-dro" instead of "San Paaay'-dro." And you don't want to be jarring!

10. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

If you're speaking in new location, observe local culture. (Good to check in with a multicultural EQ coach as well.) Notice! Notice how close people stand to one another while talking. Is there another culture group represented; if so, can you use some phrases in their language?

Is this a group that stands when a lady leaves the table and notices which fork you're using? Or is it one that wants to sit on the floor and eat chicken with their fingers? Do they speak in words of one-syllable, or have a special technological language?
