Ways to Make a Memorable Presentation

1. Accommodate as many learning styles as you can ?- some lecture, some questions, some participation, some writing.

Give them something to hold, something to look at, something to hear (you, yes, but also maybe a tape with another voice, or music), something to do with their hands.

2. Touch all the senses!

Emotions motivate us and cause us to take action. The more we can feel and experience what you're describing as if we were there, the more we'll learn, the more likely we'll act on what you're saying, and the more we'll remember it after you've gone.

Give examples of what you're teaching that involve all the senses. For instance, if you're speaking on fathering, describe what your father's deep bass voice sounded like, how scratchy his beard felt, how he smelled of Old Spice, how much you loved the hot chili he made on Sunday afternoons, the red and black checked hat he always wore in the winter, what his favorite piece of music was.

Describe how it felt to be swept up on his shoulders, or what you thought the first time you saw him cry. Describe it ? what it looked like, felt like, smelled like, tasted like, and sounded like.

3. Do something different!

What gets our attention in this chaotic world full of sensory stimulation and overload is anything different, i.e., change. If you're sitting down, get up. If you're using the mike, drop it for a moment.

If you've been standing still, start pacing. If you've been lecturing, start writing on the chalkboard, or asking questions of the audience. Wake them up and keep them involved!

4. Get them to do something different!

One of the most effective seminars I attended, the poor speaker ? it was compulsory that we attend, and it was right after a "hearty" catered lunch. We were reluctant and groggy. The first thing the speaker did was throw open a window (it was freezing outside) and ask us to get up on our feet, breathe deeply and do some calisthenics.

A less invasive way to do this is to ask your audience to regroup in some way. Pass out slips of paper with matching graphics on them so in order to pair they have to get up and move.

5. We are spirits in human bodies.

Do everything you can to get oxygen in that room and a comfortable temperature. Most conference rooms are too cold or too hot, so we seasoned-attendees know to wear layers, but pay attention to the ventilation. It may mean opening a door or windows, or asking the staff to turn up the AC.
