The Joys of Diversity

"No two of these trees looked even remotely alike, not in form or leaf or fruit. Some grew straight for the sun, others trailed along the ground or formed low shrubs, or simply petered out, the upstate New York climate not to their liking. I saw apples with leaves like those of linden trees, others shaped like demented forsythia bushes. Maybe a third of the trees were bearing fruit--but strange, strange fruit that looked and tasted like God's first drafts of what an apple could be.

"I saw apples with the hue and heft of olives and cherries alongside glowing yellow Ping-Pong balls and dusky purple berries. I saw a whole assortment of baseballs, oblate and conic and perfectly round, some of them bright as infield grass, others dull as wood ..."

This is from "The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World," by Michael Pollan. He's talking about a museum orchard called Geneva, where scientists endeavor to retain the biodiversity that makes a species strong.

They've collected seeds from Kazakhstan where apples began, the "center of diversity." They're looking for "wild apple genes" to replenish appledom. And look what they get! All sorts of interesting versions.

"Wait a minute," I thought, "as I was reading this, did you? "Just exactly what IS an apple?"

I couldn't really answer that. Certainly an apple isn't (just) that shiny round red thing that children draw. Well, I knew that because I love the Granny Smith, which is green, and the Braeburn, which is mostly yellow.

I searched for an analogy, and my right-brain moved me over to a similar example in nature: people! People have as much biodiversity as that. People come in short, tall, round, skinny, brown, Black, curly-haired, bald, male, female, long-limbed, various IQs, the singing-version and the tone-deaf version, those who love math and those who don't (go Julie!), some muscular, some soft, bass and soprano, -- we come in all shapes and sizes, like apples!

Which is cause for celebration! Like the apple, diversity makes us strong--both within and without.

Welcome diversity around you, and develop it within you. Studies show that survivors have a lot of different ways of being ("contradictory" traits such as selfish AND altruistic, intellectual AND emotional) and that's what helped them survive! Develop all the "yous". It's the emotionally intelligent thing to do.
