Honor the Differences by Julie Jordan Scott
It could have been a 21st Century Rockwell painting. Emma read aloud from a colorful picture book. Katherine scooped cookie dough. The delicious smell of fresh baked goods permeated the air.
Mom, otherwise known as me, sat with pencil in hand, scribing, scribing, scribing. Everything was as she loves it. Surrounded by her children, her notebook open and candles lit.
Six-year-old Emma laughed and pointed. I noticed a picture of the author on the dust jacket. "Look, it's a picture of Todd with his dog!" Emma read the author's note "They live together in San Francisco."
"And look, that is another picture of them that Todd drew!" In the picture, Todd's skin was blue and he had one tooth and a squiggly hair coming straight off the top of his head. The photo of the very attractive, deeply tanned man with blue eyes certainly did not match this simple and colorful drawing in the book " or did it?
The title of the book in question is "Its OK to Be Different". It is a treasure among treasured books around here. The title is one of my mantras.
I was just a little bit older than Katherine I worked at McDonald's in San Juan Capistrano. Many friendships were formed there. Students unknown to me at Dana Hills High School suddenly became buddies as we donned matching yellow polyester uniforms and hats. We looked equally ghastly which somehow bonded us for the remainder of our school years.
Lori Weims was one of my co-workers. Very cute, sparkly and smiley, Lori was on the drill team. Her brother drove a brown Ford Pinto. He was a year older than us and had a short lived McDonald's career. Occasionally he would give me a ride to or from work since we lived in the same neighborhood.
One day we worked an early shift and he brought me home in the middle of the afternoon. My brother John was sitting on the curb in front of my house, quietly holding a rolled up newspaper and tapping the other hand with it.
"I don't know how you can stand it," he wondered aloud. "Having him for a brother."
"I don't know what you mean?" I responsed.
"Well, you know, he is retarded. It's different. He is different. I certainly wouldn't want that for a brother."
Conversations like this never took place in the safe enclave where I lived before Dana Point. In Glen Ridge, New Jersey folks didn't talk about such things: at least not openly to the "different one."
Probably 9 out of 10 of my classmates talked about it amongst themselves. It most likely happened when I was out of earshot or in their heads as they worried about the tragedies that could befall their lives if they weren't careful.
Back in the present, I sat back in my chair and took another mouthful of coffee. Emma continued to turn pages, reading all the ways it was ok to be different according to Todd Parr-with-or-maybe-without-the-single-toothed-green face.
What was better? The speaking out what was different (and bad) of Lori's brother or the hidden in the corners of the hallways and the whispers when I wasn't looking of everyone else?
We share a philosophy in our house. We aim to be different. We honor differences. The only weakness in Lori's brother is he didn't know the wonder of being different yet.
Activate your passion. Honor the differences.

A tremendous number of people in America work very hard at something that bores them. Even a rich man thinks he has to go down to the office everyday. Not because he likes it but because he can't think of anything else to do. ~ W. H. Auden ~ Born February 21, 1907
