Choosing to Be, Unconventionally

I threw a birthday party for my friend, Mel, in April.

Her birthday " historically " is June 4.

We were in college at the time and we left at the end of the semester, each May, promptly prior to Mel's special day. Everyone was around to celebrate my day at the end of January. Sometimes I even decide the athletes of the NFL even throw the Super Bowl in my honor.

I wanted to honor Mel, make a day when we could be special extra special just for her.

I collected people who loved her, decorated a friend's apartment and threw open the door for a really unusual and surprising time.

It was so simple and also highly unusual.

At the same time, why not celebrate who we want to when we want to, even if it is unconventional?

After all, unconventional is about being outside the ordinary, the mundane, the every day routine, the status quo.

If you put "mundane" in one hand and "unusual and surprising" in the other hand, which one do you choose?

Please don't give a response coated in "shoulds" such as "Well, I should say I choose "surprising " and know that, in truth, you steer clear of "surprising" because when you are surprised you might become afraid and you stay away from being afraid.

Let's be as real as we possibly can today.

Routine or unconventional? Mundane or filled with moxie?

You know what you have been choosing as a habit. Now, what do you want to choose from now on?

Again, be real. Be truth filled.

If you are ready and willing to be in a space that is outside the ordinary, what one "slightly" unconventional action might you take to exemplify your commitment?

I threw an surprise un-birthday party. It was a blast. More than twenty years later I still have evidence of this slightly off center choice.
