1. Be physically active with her.

Wrestle with her when she's young and hike or play basketball with her when she's older. This shows her that you think she's capable of handling it and it's a great way to spend time with her.

2. Stay with her emotionally when she and her body start to change.

Many fathers have a difficult time when their daughters experience puberty. Acknowledge that this will be a time when she needs you the most and dislikes you the most! Stay in her life and let her know you care, even when she tells you to get lost.

3. Treat your wife great.

You can almost guarantee that your relationship with your daughter will be solid if you treat your wife well. Your daughter will relate quite easily to your wife's position and may react strongly to poor treatment.

4. Educate your daughter about advertising and the media.

Show your daughter that she doesn't have to be a super-model to succeed and be happy in the world. Live a life that shows your daughter that you don't consider women to be objects -- watch what you say, read, and do concerning women. Your daughter's watching you closely.

5. Spend time alone with your daughter.

Every week try to have some time alone with her. One hour alone each week with your daughter for eighteen years equals 39 days. Not much time before she leaves to live her own life, is it?

6. Get to know her life intimately.

Know what her dreams are, who her friends are, and what her school life is like. Her life will probably be very different than yours is, so buckle up and get ready to learn.

7. Tell her specifically what you think is great about her.

Let her know exactly what you like about her. This is always more effective than generalized praise. It doesn't hurt to regularly tell her she looks wonderful, either.

8. Get help and support from fathers who have raised daughters.

Knowing that other fathers have experienced the same kinds of things that you're going through and have survived is a great help. Your daughter will benefit most from your ability to stay flexible and negotiable. This is difficult to do when you're overwhelmed and angry.

9. Teach your daughter all about cars and other gadgets.

Men generally seem to be more interested in cars, computers, etc. Provide the opportunity for your daughter to learn about these things. Make it no different than if it was your son. She may not have much interest, but if you're enthusiastic about her learning it she may surprise you.

10. Help her to keep her dream alive.

Teach her that if she stays in touch with her dreams she can live them as well. Teach her that she can do absolutely anything she wants in life if she puts her mind to it. Here's where you can help her with that "single-minded purpose" that men do so well.
