Let Your Light Shine!

"This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine." That's what the Strengths Course© should be named. It helps people figure out, well, things like:

• I've been hiding my light under a barrel
• I'm not a diamond-in-the-rough, I'm a gem
• I am good at something
• I'm a jewel in my own crown

In fact that word "gem" keeps coming up. Nadette B., a coach, wrote: "Thanks so much for sharing this course with me, and I hope that one day, if I have a daughter, I can share it with her. You're an absolute GEM to this world." I think she's delighting in her OWN gem-ness.

It happens all too often, the folks around us start focusing on things we're not the best at, and suddenly they become "faults," and then the focusing on them makes them worse while at the same time making them all the more important, and suddenly we're 100% oriented on getting good at something we have little chance at ever excelling in.

And the things we're good at, we take for granted and don't recognize as talents because "the last thing the fish knows about is water."

Take for example the little introvert. Introverts really love time alone, to read, muse, think, contemplate. What they're doing is learning important things and also recharging their energy. They are not fond of small-talk or talking just to kill time. Introverts give energy when they're with people. The AC-DC goes in the other direction.

If you're an extravert, you're probably thinking "Huh?" You love to be with people. They energize you. You hate being alone and it drags you down. It's the opposite for the introvert.

Well, parents and kids sometimes mis-match in such things, and if two extraverts have an introverted child, they'll see those lovely contemplative traits as something that needs ... here comes that word ... FIXING.

Then the child becomes concerned that something's wrong with him and tries to start acting like an extravert.

And no longer can he sing that sweet children's song, "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine."

This can happen with all sorts of innate talents and traits. One example was a client of mine who was adopted by a hard-working farm couple. Helen loved school and to read. She's really quite an intellectual, but farm life is rigorous and physical. She told me each time she'd try and curl up with a book, her Mother would say, "Put that book down and do something useful." She used to put her lamp under her quilt in bed at night so she could sneak in just a little more reading.

"Don't let me catch you doing that again," her mother would say.

It took her many years as an adult to work that out, them wanting her to be something she was not, and disapproving of her natural ways.

What's ironic is that in my family, I was excused from all household chores in high school so I would have time to study and make A's!

Another student of mine, Nancy Mehegan, wrote, "The 'Strengths' course has been fabulous. I am finally seeing that what I thought were my weaknesses actually are the radiant gems of my truth. How ironic. This is so freeing! Thank you, Susan."

Can you feel how much happier, freer, Nancy is for having discovered these truths about herself? There's another saying relevant here, about letting your light shine on the dark corners of other people's worlds. When your own light is being put out by the misguided assumptions of other people (usually our favorite authority figures -- parents, teachers, Girl Scout leaders, and later managers and bosses and sometimes even partners), we duck for cover and "hide," and we haven't that light to shine on other people.

"This Little Light of Mine," written by Harry Dixon Loes, goes:

Now some say you got to run and hide.
But we say there's no place to hide.
And some say let the people decide
Some say the time's not right
But we say the time's just right
If there's a dark corner in our land
You got to let your little light shine.

Many of us are surely reminded of the verses from Luke 8:16-18: "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open."

It's for sure that only when we understand and accept ourselves, can we understand and accept others, and so if we keep hiding our own light under a barrel, we'll be inviting the same for others.

Listen to the music here: This Little Light of Mine and I guarantee it will stick in your mind. "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine."

Then think about letting 2004 be the year where you shine the light on yourself, discover what you're all about, and then start shining that light outward into the world. It's about finding out where your passion lies, what drives you, what you were meant to do, what makes you happy. Why not make that your #1 New Year's resolution -to let it be known and brought out into the open.
