Ten Things to Know About Preventing Rollover Fatalities

As we take to the roads for summer vacations (assuming you can afford the gasoline), please make safety your number one concern. One thing you should be aware of is avoiding rollover crashes, as they're particularly fatal. Here are ten things you need to know:

1. Rollover crashes account for 33% of all fatalities, killing more than 10,000 people a year in the US.

2. Any vehicle can rollover, but some are more susceptible than others. Taller, narrower vehicles, such as SUVs, pickups and vans, are more likely to roll over. Visit this site: NHTSA to get the safety and rollover rating for your particular vehicle.

3. Wear your seat belt. You'll be 75% less likely to be killed in a rollover crash.

4. Reduce your chances of rolling over by observing the speed limit, and not drinking and driving. Speed contributes to the possibility.

5. 85% of rollover fatalities are from single-vehicle incidents, indicating they are driver-related. Practice your EQ (don't drive when angry or preoccupied); be sure you're alert; and know and respect the state laws and laws of physics.

6. Most rollovers occur during "routine" driving, indicating again that driver factors are responsible, such as distraction, inattentiveness, speeding and impaired driving.

7. Most rollover fatalities occur when the car does what's called "tripping," i.e., leaving the road and digging into soft soil or striking something such as a curb or embankment. Therefore, one way to avoid a rollover is to stay on the road. Nearly 75% of rollover fatalities occur on rural roads because of the likelihood of "tripping" once off the road.

8. New technologies have been developed which can help prevent rollover fatalities: Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Variable Ride-Height Suspension (VRHS) are two of them.

9. Maintain your tires properly and load your vehicle properly. Any load on the roof is above the vehicle's center of gravity and will increase chances. Find out the maximum safe load and proper load distribution for your vehicle, and abide by it.

10. To avoid rolling over, if you veer off the road, reduce your speed. Then get back on the road when you can. Here's a video about maneuvering properly.
