Kids' Games That Can Teach Us How to Live Better

Here are some of favorite kids' games from childhood. Kids know that one way to get through the day is to rearrange reality a little bit.

All-y All-y in Free
Ric Me
Cooties!

Do Over! Do Over!

WHAT IT MEANS:

Nothing counts. Nothing will be remembered. We're starting all over from scratch. And isn't that marvelous? If you've played monopoly with a kid lately, you know it's all about "Can I roll the dice again? Can I do it over? Can I take it back?" We get so rigid about those things in adult life. Giving your partner and you permission to "do over, do over" can turn around a day that's started off all wrong. Why not? It's the emotionally intelligent thing to do.

PROBLEM: One of you got up on the wrong side of the bed, and your beautiful day has been ruined. You've had a big fight and have retreated to your corners and a root canal seems preferable to going with that person to the museum, as planned.

THE SOLUTION: Do Over! Do Over!

Ric me!

WHAT IT MEANS:

This means roughly, "I realize I did something dumb, said something silly, got taken advantage of and I 'get it' so you can "ric me." (The "ric" you'll receive, is a flick on your shoulder like a 'snap'.) What a great way to acknowledge you went off track, you aren't perfect, you understand this so comments aren't necessary, you won't be doing it again, and you have a sense of humor about yourself. All in two words! The main thing is letting the other person know you know so you don't get the big boring lecture.

EXAMPLE: You say to your colleague, "Well, it doesn't hurt to help her do her work. It's just this one time." Six weeks later, this person you helped has transferred the monkey over to your back (or is trying to). Everyone's noticed and thinks you're a fool.

THE SOLUTION: Okay you can Ric Me.

All-y All-y in Free!

WHAT IT MEANS:

This is what you say at the end of the Hide 'n' Seek game when everyone hasn't been found, but you're tired of looking for them. It means everyone can come on in "free" without penalty and that particular game is over. How handy for many grown-up circumstances.

EXAMPLE: Any time adults have gone hiding, such as when the lab test was read wrong and none of the lab techs will admit to having done it. How will you get them to come back and be present, or to own-up so you can get the problem solved?

THE SOLUTION: Call All-y All-y in Free.
