The Tyrannosaurus Rex Rears Its Necessary Head

In a social group I used to run with there was a veterinarian, Larry, who had a large home in the country that kept getting burglarized.

He announced one night at a formal dinner party, where he sat with my dog draped over his feet, as dogs know who love them, that he had tired of this and had gotten two attack-trained Rottweilers, slit their vocal cords, and put them out in the back yard.

The hostess eventually broke the ensuing silence with, "Well, back to which fork to use for the Genoise."

THOUGHTS THAT OCCURRED

We processed our "first thoughts" later when Larry wasn't around.

Pat thought, "How can Amanda (his wife) live with him?"

Sara thought, "Good grief, are my kids safe over there?"

I'm a lawyer's daughter; I thought, "Can you do that in Texas?"

Rob thought it was "funny," a way to relieve the tension of hearing of such an act.

Fred thought he ought to do that himself, but "maybe it's a bit much."

Sam thought, "That'll work."

OUR "BRAINS"

Neuroscience now conceptualizes that we have three brains which evolved over time, starting with what is called the "reptilian brain."

It's the dinosaur in the human pantry -- as we also have a limbic brain (which makes us aghast at considering the possible outcome of Larry's story -- some burglar is going to die, and painfully), and a neocortex (which makes us question whether it's legal, and tells us whether or not something will "work.").

The reptilian brain is the only brain the modern-day reptile has, and what the dinosaurs started out with.

Aka "the brain stem," it maintains basic functions, such as pumping blood and oxygen, and it deals in fear, territorial defense and aggression, lust, and disgust -- the emotions that give us the information that we need to stay alive and keep our genes alive.

When the reptilian brain sends out an "all-alert" emotion, it's very strong. A man defending his home and family, for instance, is a territorial thing. Larry then went on to think this through and came up with a solution to his problem.

Unfortunately this reptilian brain doesn't distinguish real threats from perceived threats.

When someone insults our ego, for instance, we feel threatened and become angry or retaliate. However, we have not actually been harmed, our body, anyway.

When the boss tells us to come in to his office, we fear we're going to be fired, and become defensive. It's the bread and butter on our table, after all, food and clothes for our children.

HIJACKING

When these reactions occur, we can be "hijacked." They are strong, designed to supercede thinking, and they are automatic. After all, if a saber-toothed tiger is headed your way, you don't want to stop and figure out what species it is.

Your reptilian brain pumps out the chemical of "fight or flight" so you will act, immediately, without thinking.

STOP TO THINK, AND YOU WOULD BE DEAD.

This, of course, can cause a problem in the modern world.

As we sit at a formal dinner worrying about what silverware to use and talking about Van Gogh, our dinosaur friend is right there with us.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Developing your emotional intelligence means learning how the brain works (neuroscience), how your emotions work (affective neuroscience) and becoming familiar with what to expect and how you might handle it to best advantage. It's a good thing to learn.

After all, when someone cuts you off on the highway, the act itself isn't life-threatening, but the chemicals your brain pumps out, the stress it causes, is life-threatening.
