I attached my backpack purse onto five-year-old Emma's shoulders and turned so that she could climb on my back and become a backpack personified. She giggled with delight as we loped across the post office parking lot.

"You are the best mommy in the whole wide world" Emma proclaimed.

We had just spent what could have been a grueling 20 minutes in line at the post office.

Instead we simply spent 20 minutes in the line at the post office.

We chatted about why they video tape "for your safety" at the post office and why there was sign up on the wall about that and "how come it keeps you safe in the first place?" We discussed stamps and why some people used post office boxes instead of receiving mail at home.

We talked about this being the place our mailman has his home office when he is not out making the rounds to his many grateful customers.

I did part of an assignment for my acting class when I closed my eyes briefly to feel what "waiting" feels like physically. I could feel it in my feet: the soft, subtle and perhaps a touch annoyed rocking motion.

And when I arrived at the counter I smiled and offered kindness to the clerk who until that time had looked stonily unappreciated and perhaps a bit lonely and misunderstood.

Emma and I waved at the video cameras. Emma called out, "Hi, Jeff, see you soon at our house!" to our mailman as she smiled and waved.

Yes, it could have been a grueling 20 minutes at the post office. Instead, it was just 20 minutes spent with payment being a hug and warm words between a mother and daughter.

A lifelong positive memory whose effect will ripple out to others.

It is you who chooses how to view each of those vignettes which make up the entirety of your life. It is you who allows yourself to have your time spent be grueling time or simply time for learning, laughter and sharing joy.
