Aim Towards Serving with Passion

Pearl S. Buck, Pulitzer Prize winning writer said, "To serve is beautiful, but only if it is done with joy and a whole heart and a free mind."

Another Friday night and I don't feel like cooking.

Like many other folks across Bakersfield, I decided to order Pizza.

Little did I know I would be reminded of a valuable lesson in service to humanity.

My first conversation:

Server: "Hello, would you like to hear our specials?"

Me: "Yes, please."

Server: "We have X for #1 and we have" and then her voice went away as she carried on a separate conversation before returning with "We have y for #6 and z for #9".

Me: "Is there anyway I can receive what I wanted to order using a Special?"

Server: "Nope!" So I ordered anyway whereupon she told me "That will be an hour!"

We hung up.

I immediately dialed back in and cancelled my order. I thought to myself, "What am I doing? There has to be a better way!" Yellow Pages in hand I called several familiar places.

Second Conversation:

Server: "Hello, please hold"

Third Conversation

Server: "Hello, will you hold?"

Fourth Conversation:

"Please hold for a moment."

So I called an unfamiliar pizza joint. The phone was answered by a friendly gentleman. He told me his name and referred me to the location that serves my neighborhood. I called that location. Immediately my requests were honored by a wonderfully helpful woman. Not only that, she reported my order would be delivered within a half an hour.

Twenty minutes later the delivery man had piping hot pizza, chicken and garlic bread on my doorstep. He had a big smile and said, "First time customer? You will be back!" He handed me a magnet for my refrigerator as well as our dinner. I was even more impressed when I served my family the delicious piping hot, cheesy pizza.

Merriam Webster has more than 46 definitions for "Serve". Some are: "To wait on a table, bring food" ... and then other, more serious definitions include: "Attend. Present. Provide."

Serving another may be as basic as bringing food to a table at a restaurant. It may be giving easy to understand directions to a person who can not find her way. Perhaps you serve as a volunteer for a non profit agency.

Another perspective to take is to make your entire life into one of service to humanity as a whole.

In the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. "Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve."

Greatness is in the everyday. It is within your reach and mine.

It shows up in how you answer the telephone. How you talk to children. How you address your co-workers. What your demeanor communicates to complete strangers. And yes, your greatness will shine if you are delivering pizza (or doing ANYTHING!) with joy, a whole heart and a pure mind.

Albert Scweitzer said: "I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve."

In what way will you serve today?

Aim to serve. Dare to discover your passion, decide to live your destiny.
