Falling in and out of love is a process. Marriage and divorce are social ceremonies that say we are together or not together. You don't need a ceremony to feel a certain way about someone. Ultimately, it comes down to how you feel in your heart.
You can be married to someone in your heart, just like you could be divorced from them without going through the pomp and circumstance. However, most modern people desire to find someone to share their life with in a formal way.
One of our life goals is to find a compatible mate. Other goals include the pursuit of higher education, financial management, career development, lifestyle choices, and family concerns.
Many modern young adults are wisely choosing to postpone marriage until the other goals have been successfully accomplished, thus placing less pressure on the marriage partnership to provide for all or most of their personal fulfillment.
The current trend for many couples is to delay marriage until both are emotionally, financially, and psychologically ready to enter into a lifetime commitment. This simple decision can alleviate many of the external issues that arise in a committed romantic relationship. The decision to marry someone is life changing. Marriage should be entered into with a sense of responsibility and commitment to the other person.
The current divorce rates show that far too many people do not make smart choices regarding whom to marry. Often it is because they fall into marriages for reasons like needing a sense of security, timing, or it seems like the right thing to do. These are and never will be good reasons to get married.
Fortunately, there are people who are taking steps to make better partnership choices. There is a program called the PREPARE/ENRICH that is offered through many churches to couples considering marriage. The assessment is over 160 questions covering important topics like financial management, conflict resolution, family planning, sexual compatibility, and family of origin issues.
PREPARE/ENRICH has been proven to predict with 85% accuracy those couples who will divorce and those who will not. After taking the assessment, the couple goes over the results with a counselor. During this time, they can talk about any issues that might concern them, which can prevent them from making a costly mistake. Many, in fact, have decided not marry after taking the assessment.
Much of the literature on the "adult years" promotes waiting longer to get married than we have done in the past. The current statistics show that Americans are not getting married until their late twenties and even thirties.
There is also evidence that modern marriages are quite short-lived--more than fifty percent end in divorce. And what is even more disturbing is that second and third marriages have an even higher rate of 60%, which end in divorce. Statistics show that people are not getting any smarter the second time around.
Other census statistics show us that marriage rates have continued to drop. This can be explained by the recent rise in couple's choosing to live together first. But despite the odds, millions of people continue to consider marriage to be one of the most satisfying traditional institutions.
Marriage can be the ultimate bond, as it openly tells the world that you and he/he are united in love, friendship and purpose. Even though modern marriages are changing, the basic reason people marry remains the same.Page: 1 2
