Beloved Friend
by Julie Jordan Scott

I felt the rhythmic banging of the phone against my ear before I was conscious of the trembling throughout my body.

I was on hold. Waiting and amazed that I still carry this heart pounding used-to-be-action-stopping fear intoning "I am not quite good enough" or "Watch your step! Rejection is just a breath away!"

I released the type grip on the telephone receiver and consciously noticed my breath as it filled my body and exited my body. Breathe -- in and out. In and out.

I reminded myself that these feelings show up when something is new or at times when my footing doesn't feel solid. As I wait, still on hold, I question the oddness of it all. I ask "Haven't I journeyed far enough spiritually to not be afraid?"

I also know something else. It is very deep within me and my sound a bit contrary at first.

Fear is my friend.

It is when I say, "Well, Fear, we're going to pass through you so that I can get to my hopes and dreams and you are not going to be a barrier to that anymore" that I can smile at Fear without becoming argumentative with it.

When I look at it from that sense, Fear pats me on the back as I stand up and nod to it, acknowledge it, and then move into whatever realm diligently and lovingly beckons me forward.

I can acknowledge fear and at the same time, move through it.

Merriam Webster defines fear this way: " to expect with alarm". The usual result -- the unconscious, knee jerk, auto-pilot jangling of fear shows up as being filled with apprehension, regret over an unwanted situation or having a dislike or discomfort for something. To wrap the filling in words, one would describe the resulting situation as "being afraid."

I find it fascinating that "being afraid" is seen as "being filled" -- it made me think of an analogy.

Right now let's think of a balloon.

It is flat and lifeless, a small piece of rubbery-plastic material.

The balloon only becomes bigger when we choose to fill it with air or helium. It stays flat and empty unless we add the energy of air or helium to power it.

Can you see how you do the same thing when you choose to fill Fear with the power of your negative thoughts and expectations?

When we forget to be afraid, we allow visits from Fear to be of service and move us forward.

When we forget to fill ourselves with being afraid, virtually anything becomes possible because we open ourselves up and into connection with the divine.

When we forget to fill ourselves with being afraid, we know there is nothing wrong in making mistakes -- that stumbling and falling is a part of learning to run, not a message to stop us from process of engagement and growth along the path.

When we forget to fill ourselves with being afraid, we understand the wisdom of all time is accessible and readily available -- in fact it is at our beck and call at all times.

When we forget to fill ourselves with being afraid, we access power and passion to lift us well beyond our current abilities in an ever evolving, ever reaching higher spiral.

When we forget to fill ourselves with being afraid we allow ourselves to be comfortable failing, to radically love and to dive into our projects without worrying about our ego or outside approval or the opinions of others because we trust ourselves completely.

When we forget to fill ourselves with being afraid, we can become exactly who we were meant to become.

Ahhhh, there she is again, my friend Fear, patting me on the back.

"Well done! Brava!"

Thank you, Fear. Now I am going to edge right past you and into my next big thing.

I turned and looked over my shoulder to wink at Fear. My heart was still pounding though its tenor has changed to one of gratitude.

The same sweet energy is calling to you -- and your struggle with Fear.

Are you ready to wink at it from the other side?

Fear doesn't want to block you, it wants you to grow beyond whatever is stopping you. Fear wants you to stop being afraid and instead, feel the power of being bigger than you were before it came to you.

Fear is waiting to serve you, to help you, to bring you to wholeness.

I spoke into the phone. "Thank you! Yes! All right, will see you then! Thank you!"

See? I had nothing to be afraid of at all. Thank you, my beloved friend - Fear.
