100 Years Later, Moving Again
by Julie Jordan Scott

"The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life."
~ William Faulkner ~

Death has been an ever present theme for me this year. At times I resent it: "I am too young!" I whine dejectedly.

My childish voice wants to yell, "It's just not fair!" as I stomp my feet and cross my arms over my chest.

I had a mantra after the death of my daughter years ago that went like this: "The sooner you learn and accept that life is not fair the better off you will be" My perspective has changed again.

We should be grateful life is unfair.

If life were fair and everything was exactly the same things would become awfully dreary, lifeless and drab. I wouldn't want that kind of life. I would rather risk hurt by opening to the motion of life, as Faulkner defines, than by staying frozen.

The Wizard of Oz wisely told Dorothy, "It is better to have loved and lost than to have never have loved at all."

He was right.

The "being unfair belief" would have me sitting back and complaining about the losses, the injustice of death this year. The reality is we all experience loss.

The loving belief, that life is thankfully NOT fair, distinguishes that the experiences with those I have lost this year stretch beyond the limits of time and space.

The love continues to come to me in the choices to move into an even grander scale, to step beyond my former comfort zones. The love--the motion that is life-- beckons me to continue asking myself, "What's next?" and "What are the questions life is asking me to respond to right now?"

Some of us will make the most of every moment.

Fewer still will continue that movement beyond their lives to create a legacy beyond their heartbeat and breath.

These are the ones who have realized that death is not a foe, it is a heavenly invitation just as Faulkner's words are an invitation.

These individuals understand that loss is a universal experience to be welcomed and embraced.

As I reviewed Faulkner's words tonight, I crafted this poem:

100 Years Later

Where will I be, 100 years later?
As a 141 year old, I imagine my body will
No longer be

I will be still
Like my daughter
No movement
Of heart or breath or thought

Form lies motionless
Decaying through history
Her art moves again

Throughout this week I have spent time with some of my favorite friends, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Martha Graham, Jesus, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau and Emily Dickinson.

For some of them, it is quite a bit longer than 100 years since they had a heartbeat. A thought. A breath.

Through my life, their art moves again.

A tremendous number of people in America work very hard at something that bores them. Even a rich man thinks he has to go down to the office everyday. Not because he likes it but because he can't think of anything else to do.
