Water Element in Feng Shui

When dealing with water energy, feng shui differentiates between still water and moving water. Still water is tranquil, unperturbed, peaceful and is associated with intuition, psychic "knowing," natural and acquired wisdom, and profound understanding. After all ... "still waters run deep."

Moving water, on the other hand is sparkling, bustling, dynamic, "in a hurry," and "is going places." Moving water is associated with networking, communications, "touching bases," making connections, and is considered a symbol of positive, healthy cash flow.

Life, as well as career concerns, need both kinds of power ... in different applications. Networking and socializing are clearly symbolized by moving water. Still water, on the other hand, aids in listening to your inner voices, encourages you to take responsibility for your choices, brings the kind of "calm" that attracts the attention of those who can use and appreciate "grace under fire." The smooth tranquility of still water suggests the kind of wisdom that supports leadership and mature, well-considered decisions.

Each kind of power, each kind of energy is important ... with essential functions to fill.

Moving water is symbolized ... or acquired ... with water fountains, paintings or photographs of water in motion ... ocean waves, white-water river rapids, rushing brooks, waterfalls. It's also symbolized by pale blue or light aqua ... shades the color of rushing water.

Still water is found in a brandy snifter with a flower floating in it, goldfish bowls, paintings or photographs of lakes, ponds, pools. Colors appropriate to this energy are indigo, dark blue, and black. Keep in mind that stagnant water and still water are not the same thing! Water that has grown stale, murky, or fetid ... doesn't carry the kind of energy you want around you at all! If you are using fish bowls or flower arrangements in vases to bring water element into your area, be sure to keep them fresh, clean, and clear.

Listen to your instincts, your "inner voice," when deciding what items represent "water element" to you. Things that are personally relevant to you are just as valuable, just as powerful, as ones dictated by tradition. This is particularly true when deciding which colors are more associated with moving water and which with quiet water in your mind. Trust your feelings. If something says "water" (or better still "moving water / quiet water") to you, then it is part of the water element in your world. Make it so.
