The Winter Sunday Afternoon Blues
... and You ... and EQ

One clients laments that if only she "had money," she could find something to do on this winter Sunday afternoon, while two people I know who "have money" can't buy their way into any kind of happiness with it, on a winter Sunday afternoon or any other time.

It reminds me of something my mother used to say: "If all of our problems were hung on a line, you would take yours, and I would take mine."

Whatever the circumstances are, use your emotional intelligence and don't wish away the good in your situation. Sure, I was thinking earlier, I wished my honey was here and we were preparing some great boeuf bourgignonne for us both, but then I'd have to get dressed and make a run in this downpour to the grocery ... and then all that cleaning up afterwards, and maybe the gaining of a lb. or two I didn't need. I distracted myself with a household project I'd been putting off. The time passed.

Often the thing you wish you had or could do, or the place where you wish you were, are not the answer, unless it's a fantasy. Yes, there was that magic moment on the beach with that special someone, and that time your toddler was clean from his bath, dressed in his Carter pjs and enchanting in your arms as you rocked him, but you can't replicate a perfect moment, you can only be glad you had it and delight in the memory, and know they'll come again and appreciate them when they do.

One of my favorite quotes is from George Washington Carver: "How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because some day in your life you will have been all of these."

Some day in your life you are likely to be all these things, and some day in your life you're likely to have every kind of dismal Sunday afternoon there is, so don't over-react. Remember your EQ tools - distract yourself with an intellectual task, lift your mood with physical exercise, go find some positive people (and avoid people you know are negative), put on some inspiring music, make some homemade cookies and smell them baking, play with the dog, or get outside - things always feel different outside of four walls.

Things could be worse. They could also be better. It's up to you
