He Comes with the Sunrise

My grandfather visited me today in the quiet space of the pre-sunrise air. He spoke in the whistle of the train, its sounds misting across the miles from the tracks due northwest of my kitchen window.

Grandpa saying "Yes, Julie, keep moving forward."

I paused and smiled, grateful to Grandpa for being in touch with me. I realized that I hadn't heard from him lately.

A-ha.

I hadn't heard. His voice had been in train whistles far and wide, perhaps, but my life was so busy being filled with the stuff of life that I missed his messages completely.

Last week while we were painting endless arrangements of dots onto our "Sunday in the Park with George" set, Amy proclaimed, "It is too quiet in here! I need noise!"

Sometimes that is what fills up our life: volumes of noise reverberating around us. The noise clutters up our overly filled calendars and well worn commitments.

Even when we are deeply satisfied with the activities which over-stuff our lives, if we are not careful and discerning, those very passionate activities will drown out the beauty within the mundane moments which stand still and poised, waiting for us to tune into their unique brand of bliss.

It took the incense of quiet in the early morning to finally hear Grandpa again.

He repeated, "Yes, Julie, keep moving forward. Yes!"

I closed my eyes in complete gratitude for the simple moment when I heard the train whistle again. My smile deepened.
