We Feel Like We Know You

I sat facing the woman in the form fitting black top and the man who I am thinking is most likely her boyfriend, a slight man whose features were all the same color. His hair, his beard, his eyes, his eyebrows, his freckles and I think perhaps even his lips were the same tawny shade.

I reached out to introduce myself.

"Hi, I am Julie" I said as my hand met the woman's hand.

I am Keely" and the tawny hair man then took my hand and said in a surprisingly suave actor-esque voice, "and I am Daniel.

I answered in the requisite "It is very nice to meet you."

The woman smiled and said, "We have seen you in a lot of things so we feel like we know you."

I smiled and sat back in my seat, feeling a flutter deep in my belly, that rustling of recognition from someone who is a stranger to me recognizing me for my work.

For me performing is not an every-day, run of the mill thing.

I doubt it ever will be for me.

The more than thirty years spanning the space between performing is opening in one important aspect: it allows me, in fact, it calls me to keep the art of performing as a sacred privilege.

I never know exactly what will come from the characters I portray. Each one seems to have a different agenda for me. A different reason for me to take on that costume of someone else's life.

Most of all, it brings me closer to myself as I live my life.

It shines a light on everything else.

Sometimes I feel exceptionally vulnerable on stage. Sometimes the emotion is so raw I feel like my insides are being scraped up and over my rim. There are times when I keep my performances secret because what is portrayed makes me feel unclothed: it comes too close to my skin.

It is so intimate there are times I don't feel ready to share it.

It has been a little more than a year now since I experienced transcendence in my acting class.

At times it feels like forever ago and at other times, I still pause in wonder at the entire experience. It is only every once-in-a-while that I ponder what might have been if I hadn't given up the stage when I did " if I had loved myself enough back then to have stayed with something even though I had felt so hurt and betrayed by my participation.

Back then, I wasn't courageous enough to stay the course.

Most of the time I am able to stay purely present to whatever is knocking at the door to my passion, calling to me in the moment.

So now I wait and watch and wonder.

I am taking time to pause, reflect and express gratitude.
