Edict For Change
In 601 A.D. Pope Gregory the First issued a now-famous edict to his missionaries concerning how to handle the beliefs and customs of the peoples he hoped to convert to Christianity, religious conversion being no small cultural change.
According to Santino again, "Rather than try to obliterate native peoples' customs and beliefs, the Pope instructed his missionaries to use them: if a group of people worshipped a tree, rather than cut it down, he advised them to consecrate it to Christ and allow its continued worship."
This reminds me of D. H. Lawrence's quote that gods change with the men who conceive them, but the god-stuff roars eternally. In other words, all peoples worship, and all peoples struggle with the concept of death. The Pope said use this; go with the flow, not against it.
In keeping with this edict, Church holy days were deliberately set to coincide with native holy days. The Christian feast of All Saints was assigned to November 1st, and was meant to substitute for Samhain, but of course it didn't.
The Church again tried in the 8th century, naming November 2nd as All Souls Day-when the living prayed for the souls of the dead. But the traditional beliefs and customs lingered on. As Santino says, "the powerful symbolism of the traveling dead was too strong, and perhaps too basic to the human psyche, to be satisfied with the new, more abstract Catholic feast honoring saints."
With time, All Hallows Eve (the night before) became Hallowe'en. "The Celts," writes Santino, "continued to propitiate the spirits (and their masked impersonators) by setting out gifts of food and drink."
Nearly all our present-day Halloween customs date back to the Celts. As centuries went by, people began to dress in costumes and perform antics for the food and drink, aka "treats," called "mumming." And since for much of the world, it's harvest time, we continue with such traditions as dunking apples, caramel apples, fruits, nuts, cinnamon and spiced cider.
According to Santino," [the] masked antics challenge, mock, tease and appease the dread forces of the night, of the soul, and of the otherworld that becomes our world on this night of reversible possibilities, inverted roles, and transcendency. In so doing, they are reaffirming death and its place as a part of life in an exhilarating celebration of a holy and magic evening."

Don't Cut Down The Tree
So if you're trying to adjust to a new culture, or trying to change the current culture in your office, keep in mind the Pope's edict. The best way to accomplish your goal is to disturb as little as possible. For example, there is communication in every office. It may be through "pregnant silence," or meetings, or memos, or wandering around and chatting, or e-mail, or scheduled appointments with doors closed, but all offices communicate.
If you're new to the culture, remember the same things are going on (communication, for instance) and you just have to figure out how it's done there.
If you're trying to change the culture, use what's there. Don't cut down the tree, rename it. You're still doing the same thing, you're just doing it differently. Page: 1 2
