Halloween and Multiculturalism

I graduated from college, married and moved to North Carolina, but was sure I'd know how to behave. After all, I'd moved every 3 years growing up, as my father worked his way up in his career. I was used to different cultures.

Then I went to my first North Carolina baby shower and really embarrassed myself. Turned out there, if you won a prize in one of the games, it was expected to be given to the honoree. I won the first prize, and it was ambivalent, so I didn't "get" it. I said "thank you" for the prize and put it beside me. It was a photo album.

I was aware of tension in the room, but I thought it was because "the outsider" had won.

When the second prize -- baby bottles -- was won and was immediately handed over to the honoree, then I knew. And that's how we learn!

Multicultural

Most of us will move through many cultures in our lives, and nowadays you can sit in an office and have many cultures move through you! Multiculturalism is now a fact of life. Since we moved so much, I thought I had the multicultural thing figured out: observe and learn quickly, or you'll do it "wrong" and get made fun of -- which is one way we align others to our culture. Another way is to conquer and enforce. A third way it to educate beforehand.

For instance, if you want to change your office's culture, you can make fun of people doing the old things (never preferable); decree and enforce (causes resistance); or educate-bring in a program that educates everyone, singles out no one, and faults no one.

The origins of Halloween, which began as an ancient Celtic festival of the dead, have to do with a multicultural situation that's quite instructive.

According to Jack Santino, the Celts divided their year into 4 major holidays. According to their calendar, the year began on what would now be November 1st, which marked the beginning of their winter.

"Since they were pastoral people, Santino writes, "it was a time when cattle and sheep had to be moved to closer pastures and all livestock had to be secured for the winter months. Crops were harvested and stored.

The date marked both an ending and a beginning, in an eternal cycle, and the festival . was called Samhain (pronounced Sah-ween), the biggest and most significant festival of the Celtic year." They believed that at this time of year, the ghosts of the dead mingled with the living.

Samhain became the Halloween we're familiar with when Christian missionaries attempted to change the religious practices of the Celts, which centered around the Druids, who were priests, poets, scientists and scholars.
