So now everyone's doing it. As one efetist newspaper reporter commented re: the Dan Rather memo fiasco (in perhaps what was a slip of the keyboard), it was "the little people" and their blogs who first raised suspicion about the memo. The writer seemed surprised that said "little people" knew things - like font styles, old typewriters, and the parameters of old National Guard terminology.

I wasn't surprised. Were you?

Analogous to the burgeoning field of coaching, we are now more willing to publicly acknowledge what we've privately and intuitively known all along: the accumulation of academic credentials doesn't necessarily mean what someone has to say is more important, wiser, more true, or more helpful than what someone un-credentialed might say. Many of us know things. Many of us have things to say that are worth reading.

And what are "we" reading? Apparently fiction. According to Sue Johnston, head coach of "It's Understood," a Gallup poll estimated that 58% of people in the US haven't read a non-fiction book from cover-to-cover, ever. She further cites Brian Tracy's (success guru) suggestion from another Gallup study that if you read one non-fiction book a month, you will be in an elite 1% of living Americans.

Considering that non-fiction transmits information, it's amazing, isn't it.

Now let's get to why YOU aren't writing yet.

Whatever you cite as your reasons, it probably boils down to what's commonly called "writer's block." Why not look at it the way Roger Simon, a writer, does: "There is no such thing as writer's block. My father drove a truck for 40 years. And never did he wake up in the morning and say: 'I have truck driver's block today. I am not going to work.'"

"It's not MY work," you say, "not my JOB." But neither is it for many who write. To them, it's a joy. Could you be missing something?

Whether you want to write for fun, or to promote your business on the Internet, it does take work, but that hasn't stopped all those bloggers. The other day a blogger told me (who write for a living), "It takes me over an hour to write each one. It may not show it, but it takes a lot of time." It does for me, too. And I also hope it shows.
