I was reading a book the other day published some 10 years ago lamenting that The Written Word was in danger of disappearing from the US landscape. I recall a discussion with a friend of mine about that same time who's a published author. "Soon no one will be reading books," he said. He meant hard-copy novels, his venue.

One of the surprises of this decade and the Information Age, however, has been the resurgence of reading and writing brought about by the Internet. Free and accessible, it seems we can't get enough of it!

There are probably more people writing things than ever before, as the expose re: Dan Rather's notorious memo is showing. From the "rant and rave" section on Zinos.xom to the Coachville's Top Tens, to millions of personal blogs, the urge to express oneself has overcome any hesitancy about writing skills in the US. No secret to expressive art therapists and those who've long espoused journaling for what ails you, is it any wonder that public journaling -that is, journaling for all the world to see - has become so popular?

What lover isn't a poet? What person doesn't want his or her opinions known? Who does not have a story to tell? Who hasn't experienced that writing about "it," makes us feel better about "it."

Beyond the promise of a wide audience, one thing that's undoubtedly freed us to start expressing ourselves in writing with such exuberance is the relaxed ambiance on the Internet. There's no grammar fascist standing guard over what's written. The thoughts flow freely, unimpeded by intimidation over the proper use of the semi-colon, or the extra step of having to look up "connoisseur" in a dictionary. It was always a problem to those of us English majors way back when - how do you look up the word when you don't know how to spell it? Well, now a close approximation is good enough for spell check or askjeeves. Ah, the thrill of it all.

Suffice it to say, one of life's greatest joys is to speak and be listened to; to write and be read.

And now with blogs you can even get the feedback immediately, or almost immediately. Both positive and negative comments indicate that you are indeed being listened to, are being read. It's very soul-satisfying.
