Julie's Grandfather

Julie's grandfather used to know everything and was a fascinating conversationalist. Nothing escaped his steel-trap mind, which is to say memory. He delighted in intellectual discussions, and much of his self-esteem was centered on this ability. It also gave him (and others) a lot of joy. As they say, "to be a man is to be listened to."

Now things are different. He can't participate in discussions the way he used to because his short-term memory is less than it once was. He reads the news and tries to stay current, but it doesn't stick like it used to. However, he has total recall of much of what he learned in school and throughout his early adulthood.

During a recent family discussion centering around movies and movie stars, Julie watched his interest fade and his face cloud over as he became unable to keep up.

Grampa," she said, "What was your favorite movie growing up about this issue of good and evil? What was the outcome? What's your take on this?

The Thread

Notice that in each of these events three things occur:

1. We understand how the other is feeling and choose not to address that directly. In other words, we avoid saying, "How does it feel to fall flat on your face in front of all your friends repeatedly?"

2. We indicate this understanding in an oblique way -- either by adding something about ourselves (the cane) or refocusing the conversation (leading it to where Gramps could participate in full glory).

3. We PRESERVE THE DIGNITY OF THE OTHER.

If you're in the prime of life and/or otherwise blessed with things like perfect vision, total recall, sharp intellect, physical strength, good coordination, robust health, and so forth, it's good to remember the words of George Washington Carver: "How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because some day in your life you will have been all of these."

If this attitude -- understanding how others feel and wanting to help -- is not knee-jerk to you, you may be asking yourself "Why? Why should I behave this way? What's the benefit?" It's a fair question to ask and the answer is resounding: "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion" The Dalai Lama.

And the greatest gifts that are given are those that preserve the dignity of the person to whom they're given.

So, next time you observe someone who can't do what you can do, or doesn't do something very well, delight in your own capacities, but then lend a helping hand, in the symbolic sense. As the Polynesians say -- it's their turn now. It will be your turn next.
