"I want my shoes untied right this minute! It's important my shoes are untied" said Eloise while at the same time she feverishly tied her shoes in double and triple knots.

What is wrong with Eloise's picture?

She was saying with her mouth what she wanted and her actions were completely contrary to this supposed desired end result.

Somewhere along the line something had gone awry.

Something had been deflected, denied and turned away. Eloise no longer was able to see how her contrary actions became a wall between what she said she wanted and what actually took form.

Here is an example you will relate to as well.

It is a common interaction between two individuals that can have this effect. I am quite familiar with it from both sides.

I don't like to admit it and at the same time, it is important that I do.

Here is one way that it sounds.

Bob, Frank's boss, said to him last week, "Frank, the talk you gave to the sales team was top notch. The example you used really inspired them: especially Maury."

Frank's response, "Oh, it was nothing, really. Maury was already inspired anyway."

Sheryl was showing her paintings to another local artist who said, "Sheryl, you really captured the essence of Morro Bay in this one."

Sheryl's response: "Oh this? Its so rough, so primitive. I am thinking I will just get rid of it. I am liking it less and less each time I look at it."

I used to constantly deflect compliments. Whenever people would comment me I would insist on deflecting their observations of beauty within me.

I didn't realize then that dishonoring their words was destructive on several fronts. First, I was using a forceful energy which knocked down another person who was showing love to me. Secondly, it was also literally pushing away opportunities that were trying manifest in my life. I was actually slamming doors shut that were opening for me as they tried to show me the way down my verbally preferred path.

The pain from deflecting compliments becomes like a virus which reaches into the air and effects people around us.

1. We hurt ourselves by not allowing the other person's positive reflection of us to permeate our lives. Choose to allow the reflections to steep their way into your blood, your bones, your being.

2. We hurt the person complimenting us by reflecting to them "Your opinion doesn't count!" Choose to say "Thank you" instead, which also translates into "I acknowledge and value your opinion."
