It's a common phenomenon ... or a common problem, depending on your view. People attract the same type of person into their lives, into their relationships, over and over again. Some women, for instance, will go from one abusive man to another ... as if they were cursed with magnetic attraction for such people, as if they literally had a psychic sense about who will wind up hitting, berating, insulting, or belittling them ... and who won't.

If such a woman has a friend who "fixes her up" with a date whom everybody knows is a nice guy, a wonderful person, a sensitive, caring human being who's also looking for a partner ... they'll inevitably find one another boring, claim they have nothing in common, say there's just no spark, no chemistry. The date fizzles, sputters, and everybody goes home early ... and alone.

But just let this same women meet a guy standing in line at the grocery store who is guaranteed to run the abuse games on her one more time, and magically, between the chewing gum and the checkout stand, she'll have wangled a way to give him her phone number, set up a tryst for next Saturday ... and off she goes again. Once more ... she's in love!! Like a lock in a key, the abuser somehow fits what she wants in a partner, and instinctively she knows it.

Psychologists talk about patterns, neurotic need fulfillment, and imprinting behaviors. The rest of us call it "making the same mistake all over again." And if you've ever tried to talk someone whose into this sad cycle out of it ... by pointing out the tell-tale signs of heartbreak down the road, the history of busted relationships the guy drags in his wake, his criminal record, the restraining order his ex-wife has out against him, the kinds of "friends" he hangs with, and the fact that the guy gives "normal people" the creeps ... you might as well save your effort.

She's sure she can fix him. She's sure he's just misunderstood. And you know how the chorus goes ... and how this song is going to end.

For some reason, this seems to be a trait more of women than men, although I know men aren't immune. Maybe women just talk about their issues more freely. Maybe I just know more of them. Maybe (almost certainly!!) women come to an astrologer more readily, more eagerly, than men.
