The red robin splashed in a puddle created by an overzealous sprinker. I laughed to myself as I watched her cavort and strut her stuff as if the puddle was a fancy resort pool in a most desirable destination.

Two-year-old Sam watched alongside me, holding his breath as he observed silently. He was enthralled with this little feathered friend who then scampered across our lawn to munch on some mulberries.

The attraction was too much to bear and Sam toddled for a closer look which sent the bird to the branches of the tree. Sam pointed and called out for his friend.

"Let's play!" Sam seemed to say to the robin.

Earlier this week, the robin and her feathered friends spoke to me as Sam fought a bout of cellulitis.

Sam's illness had implications beyond medical care. Not only did I have to deal with my troubled, not well child, I had to juggle my schedule, find replacement leaders for classes and deal with the reality of a much lower level of productivity for that week.

The weather was surprisingly temperate for Bakersfield as Sam and I spent hours glued together, chest to chest, heart to heart. The only time Sam wasn't in my arms was when we drove to the doctor's office.

On my third trip on that first day, I drove with my car windows open.

Peace and quiet permeated my Mazda as I heard the songs from the neighborhood birds rising to meet me. Later I reclined on my bed with Sam on my shoulder and the windows wide open. A bird friend hopped on a branch outside and whistled to me.

The bird seemed to be speaking these words to me: "There is plenty of time, your work will still be there, and Sam is loving these moments with you even as he is in pain. Your job is to love these moments too. Just be 100% with that little heart beating next to yours." My heart smiled in response.

Kissing the top of Sam's sleeping head, I relaxed into the pillows on my bed. It had been a long time since I luxuriated restfully in the middle of the afternoon.

My bird friends were right. My job is to love EACH moment. To play. To be with the beating hearts next to mine.
