Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

Julia Cameron writes about a concept called "Creative Wounding" " where the creative juices are literally knocked out of us because of the pain that may come as a result of criticism from either ourselves or from others.

In my latest creative adventure onto the stage, I have learned this on an even deeper level.

Try this on for a moment: Imagine becoming a living, breathing target on a practice rifle range.

Here I am, trying my hardest right in this moment.

PING!

Here I go, trying again!

Ping, P-P-P-pppppppp-i-n-g!

Ouch, that smarts. I know, I will turn around and try it one more time¦..

Ping, P-I-N-G, Ping¦¦

Triple ouch. Now I have lovely bruises on this other side.

And what does every actor-singer-cast member get to do after being hit and hit and hit and hit and hit?

Jump right back up and into firing range again.

I am sure by this time you may be thinking, "oh, this is a sheer laugh riot." I can hear you brimming over with envy at the shots I am taking on every side and in places I didn't even know existed.

This is the very reason many talented, heartful people stay away from the creative life. Wounding is why I didn't climb on the stage for more than 30 years between performances.

The slinging of shots and the pain of each hit stops us from moving forward.

I have a tendency to sling quite a few shots right from inside my body and my mind. The thoughts and emotions ricochet through my veins, shrieking, gagging, wretching, pointing fingers and daring me to embarrass myself with just one more horrifyingly bad performance.

It takes a certain amount of light and understanding that many are true and may actually of service once I let the sting settle in and move out and through me and into an improved performance. I have come to be grateful for them on many occasions. I would rather hear them and be able to move beyond any weaknesses than not be aware of my weaknesses.

The most significant lesson is this one.

It is not the PINGS that hurt the most.

It is the unwillingness to get back up that hurts the most.

It is in our own stubborn refusal to see the light within the PINGS that points the way to the best version of us as possible.

In choosing to move beyond the ache and sting and then getting up and learning each time that I will continually prosper.

Ping. Get back up.

P-I-N-G. Get back up.

Ping. Ping. PING. Get back up.

Focus on the light. Practice and fill in the gaps of knowing so that this time you will prove to everyone " including yourself " your performance is nothing short of perfection.
