Whose Dream?
by Julie Jordan Scott

Think for a minute about Shaquille O'Neal, star basketball player.

Imagine how he would end this sentence: "My dream is to .........."

How do you suppose he would complete that sentence?

Perhaps his dream is to break records with his team, the LA Lakers. To continue his individual strengths as a player, carving his legacy with his number and his basketball. Maybe his dream is getting the highest quantity of endorsements internationally.

I was delighted to discover that Shaq has a dream that expands beyond his prowess as a professional athlete.

He also is a real estate tycoon with a Cause.

Michael Liberty, Founder and Chairman of American Housing Preservation, Inc stated "Shaq is now the biggest landlord in the country". He was not simply referring to Mr. O'Neal's physical stature, he was referring to the size of his real estate holdings.

Shaq completed his dream statement this way: "My dream is to own $1 Billion a year in affordable housing."

Shaq lived the projects as a child before his father joined the army. He knows first hand the importance and significance of available, reasonably priced housing for people who are on their pathway to their dreams.

The first lesson from Shaq in following our dream is to start with a blend of small sized and significant.

Four years ago, Shaq and his uncle began investing in foreclosure properties, repairing them and selling them still at an affordable price. They creating a profit while allowing someone else to realize a dream: the pride of home ownership.

We can begin to follow our Dream in a small and significant way as well.

Take action by "putting your toe in the water".

And then, keep going.

Instead of talking about getting drenched, actually walk to the edge and see how it feels to your toes.

With the next phase, try your entire foot. And then up to your knee, your hips, your waist, your shoulders.

Shaq did not just talk about it and then buy outrageous numbers of units. He started small and worked his way into becoming a serious investor. Plus his investments have his heart and a cause attached.

If it was only real estate riches he was after, he may have taken different actions. He may have invested differently.

One of the most valuable lessons from Shaq's dream is to attach your heart's cause to your dream.

The dream is not all about Shaq, it is also about all those people who will receive value from his real estate holdings.

I can imagine children living in the properties, knowing that one of the owners is a famous basketball player. Within Shaq's heart dream is the creative space for exponential dreams to begin to take root and blossom.

Simply stated, the lesson from Shaq's dream includes the following steps:

1. Start small and significantly.
2. Keep moving.
3. Attach your heart's Cause to your dream.
4. Nourish other's dreams through your dream.

Take a deep breath and listen in the quiet for the determined beat of your heart.

Release your mind and complete this sentence: "My dream is to........"

And now the choice is yours. Its time to follow the four steps listed here. Its time to dip your toe into the water.
