Wilting or Wondering?

One of my favorite spots in my house is my front porch.

My porch faces East. As the sun rises, you will oftentimes find me spending my quiet time there greeting the day along with early rising birds. Automatic sprinklers begin dancing with the day early as well as they refresh the thirsty soil in preparation for another day.

Earlier this Spring my porch housed my vegetable nursery. I had little pots with seedlings in them. I was so excited: this was my first year to grow vegetables.

What I did not know at that time was my four year old daughter, Emma, and my neighbor, Shauna, had been putting extra seeds into the rose garden.

As the seedlings in the rose garden started to come up, I thought, "There is something different about these weeds". After a bit longer, I realized that was because they were not weeds at all! They were, in fact, vegetables. Some cucumbers and zucchini to be exact!

For the past several weeks I have been preparing soil to transplant these growing vegetables as well as some sunflowers which needed some thinning.

This weekend I participated in several miracles.

One: my first tomatoes are now growing on the vine.

Second: my second transplants took to their carefully prepared soil with minimal shocking.

The first crop of transplants all survived the replanting. They did not survive very well, however, and in many ways they are still recuperating. This time, I mindfully prepared the way for my precious plants.

As is so common with my pursuits with plants, they offer me more lessons than I could ever imagine. The benefits from this project can be applied to your business, your relationships and your life.

Consider these steps the next time you are faces with a challenging circumstance.

#1) Make your preparations consciously and from a heartfilled space. Do not dwell on past failures: choose to learn from them while growing beyond them.

#2) Be gentle with yourself during the transition. Think smooth, careful and courteous towards the situation. Respect and honor the fragility of being outside of where you are most firmly grounded.

#3) Recognize that when wilting is highly evident and death looks like a fact, it may not be a fact at all. In fact, this is the time for courageous commitment. For my plants, it meant spraying them off lovingly with carefully prepared solutions, talking to them, gently stroking their leaves. What does this mean for you? In your business, relationship, life?

#4) Continue and re-visit the process. The first vegetables I replanted are doing fine now. Not great, though with continued care, they will definitely be productive. Part of their being was to shorten the learning curve with the second batch of vegetables.

#5) Give thanks for the many blessings which surround you in all phases of the challenging circumstance. Gratitude has many properties, including a force all its own. As you sincerely enter into active gratitude in any area of your life, prepare for life transformation.

And it all began with one moment of wonder: "There is something different about these weeds."

Keeping it alive will keep you alive. Without it, your wilt will be permanent. One truth I have learned consistently is this: when we lose our wonder, we lose our way.
