Everybody from Oprah to journaling teachers talk about the benefits and spiritual importance of keeping a Gratitude Journal. Sure it sounds like a great idea. It's a metaphysical truth that what you focus on ... especially what you focus on with gratitude ... increases. It's a way of inviting more of that particular thing into your life ... and it works on everything from love to wealth to synchronicities. Be grateful for what you have ... express that gratitude with sincere gestures of thanksgiving ... and the Universe, like a thrilled and indulgent parent, rushes to give you more.

But sometimes -- or for some of us ... the commitment to keep a Gratitude Journal can also sound like another time-consuming responsibility to heap onto an already brimful and overcrowded life. The time for that has to be subtracted from the time reserved for something or someone else. There are only 24 hours in a day ... and most of us don't get enough time for sleep, or self-care, or spiritual replenishment as it is.

So ... is there a compromise? Well, on the theory that half a loaf is better than nothing ... how about a Gratitude List? A quick list of "Things I am Grateful for" ... when you notice these features off and on throughout your day ... doesn't take but a few seconds to jot down your item (if you keep list-making equipment ... like note pads and pencils in all your favorite haunts. Purse, car, kitchen, bathroom (yes, bathroom), bedside table, side table in the TV room, by the telephone)

It fleshes out the structure of things to write about in more detail when you find the time ... and if it's important to you ... you will. And if you start seeing the benefits from it, it may start becoming more important ... in one of those snowball-rolling-downhill-moments these sorts of exercises inspire. Remember, what you focus on ... increases. And keeping a Gratitude List is a way of focusing on more abundance of things to be grateful for. There really is magic in this if you're willing to try it just for a little while.

Just for Today
Let your heart feel the joys of thanksgiving ...

Notice the moments in your day when you experience
something for which you are truly grateful.
Write it down on your informal Gratitude List.
It may become a Gratitude Journal before you know it.
Try to have a least five items on your list at the end of the day.
At the end of the day, review your list ... and sincerely feel your gratitude for each item.
You might even consider an actual word of thanks to the Cosmos for this blessing.
"Thank you, Spirit, for ........."

This can raise your spirits, pull you up from weariness and despair,
enrich your life, and make you more conscious of the goodness
that is yours ... every day.
Do it for yourself ...

And watch what happens.
