In the United States we celebrate Thanksgiving this Thursday.

I found an internet resource describing much of the history of the holiday and including Samoset, Squanto, the Pilgrims and even a bit of Abraham Lincoln... some of the "personality" behind this holiday.

One of my favorite memories of the holiday from my adult life was the year we hosted Thanksgiving dinner in our apartment in the Mid Wilshire district of Los Angeles. Rather smallish quarters, a charming second floor apartment bursting at the seams with more than 20 people including family and friends and friends of friends.

The day before I had walked alongside children of many ethnicities sporting Pilgrim Hats and headdresses all smiling and laughing and I smiled and laughed along with them.

And then there was a Thanksgiving from my younger years.

Mr. Corigliano was my seventh grade science teacher. There are several things I remember in relationship to him. One was my very out of character back-talking to him during a field trip to Philadelphia and his disdain for the Thanksgiving holiday.

"Its all about Turkey," he proclaimed. "People don't know how to be thankful in this day and age. That's why I call it Turkey Day."

I remember blinking my eyes from my one armed desk in the second row, clearly not getting what he was meaning in that statement. In my household, I thought it should be called "Football Marathon Day" since we got more pigskin than turkey skin throughout the day off from school preceding the Friday adventure romp at Willowbrook mall.

The "in this day and age" of that time was in the mid-70's.

In the "this day and age" my own experience of the fourth Thursday in November has come a long, long way.

It's neither Marathon Football Day or Waiting for Huge Holiday Shopping Day nor is it Turkey Day.

It's a day set aside to examine and express gratitude. The deep gratitude for all that is around us and within us. It is a day that has high spiritual tones across belief system lines, where we can all hold hands in unity.

It is a day we can literally break bread together as we are thankful for each and every aspect of our life whether or not it has blossomed as we would like it to have blossomed yet.

It is a day when we can put down grudges and invite our grateful heart to heal hurts, to forgive past disagreements, to access all that life has to offer in its rich lusciousness.

In the "this day and age" of the 21st Century, we can gather globally in celebration whether it is our nation's holiday or not.

I have an invitation for you: for the next 72 hours, intentionally take note of the many blessings you receive in your life. Consciously give thanks for those blessings, either through speaking them out loud to someone else or writing a note or singing a song or writing a poem or simply meditating and adding your heartfelt grateful energy to the mix of all the others on the planet who are doing the exact same thing.

Reap the rewards of an abundant harvest.
