How to Enjoy the Holidays if You're an ACA
Part 1
by Susan DunnLess daylight (Seasonal Affective Disorder), bleak winter weather, the holidays, the stress of family gatherings, too much to do, too little time and money, unrealistic expectations ... 'tis the season to be stressed.
If you're the adult child of an alcoholic (ACA), holidays can bring back nightmares. Others may have memories of the happy family gathered around the groaning board, cheerfully talking as the turkey is carved.
For you, the memories are more like someone screaming, someone throwing the turkey, someone sick in the bathroom or passed out on the couch, or sullen silence where you or your brother were expected to supply the "happiness" though you were scared and sad and too sick to eat the meal your inebriated mother had burned anyway.
If you're an ACA, here are some ways you can not just survive the holidays, but enjoy them!
1. Start early to identify, understand and express your feelings, as they will escalate this time of year. Work with a coach, counselor or therapist if necessary.
2. Be as kind to yourself as you would be to anyone else.
ACOAs tend to judge themselves far harsher, and also to have an extremely strong sense of responsibility. Remember you aren't alone - let others help. You aren't in charge of anyone else's happiness for the holidays. They can take care of themselves.
3. Watch the thrill-o-meter.
Many ACOAs crave thrills and excitement, because of what life was like when they were a child, but this is a "habit" you need to break. After all, it wasn't really
