What is Wrong with this Holiday?

We all have memories from our childhood celebrations --Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah. And at the same time we were forming ideas of how our holidays would be in the future -- just like in the past! We were sure it would always be the same -- in feelings and in structure.

So here you are, having the first Thanksgiving with your Dad, after he and your Mom have divorced.

Or the first Thanksgiving at your son's, and it's a festivity you don't recognize ... it's the way her family does things.

Or the first Thanksgiving your ex has the children, and you're sitting on the couch at a friend's house, wondering what happened.

Or your new wife has prepared ... what's this? Ham instead of turkey? Potatoes au gratin instead of mashed potatoes? Boule de niege instead of pumpkin pie?

How do we adjust to these changes?

First of all, we must consider them "changes," not the end of the world. No, it isn't like it used to be, and no, it isn't like you expected, but yes, it is your holiday, and yes you can still have a good time.

It's a good time to take out your Emotional Intelligence checklist and go over it.

If you can manage to be flexible and creative, your feelings about your holiday will survive! Although you may feel quite uncomfortable, and not know quite what to do, it's only because it's new.

Surely your Dad and his new wife are joyous you are with them and doing their best to make you feel at home. And your daughter-in-law has a lovely new tradition you never would've thought of.

And when you leave your friend's house, you'll go home completely rested because you didn't cook, you didn't clean, you didn't play hostess, and you won't be cleaning up. And how come you just now found out about Boule de Niege -- yum!

It's a great lesson in optimism! If you can focus on what's positive, chances are you'll go home saying, "Wow! How come I never thought of the corn kernel game?" or "I don't think anyone's ever been so nice to me as Dad's new wife," or "I could learn to like this showing up for Thanksgiving and not doing a thing!" or "I never liked turkey anyway."

The first Christmas for me and my children after my divorce had all the signs of being a rough one. Things were so different! So I sat down with the boys and said, "Hey! Let's do something completely different this year for Christmas. (Like we had a choice.) What would you all like to do?"

They chose that we would order pizza for Christmas Eve dinner, and we ended up sitting on the floor eating it in front of the fireplace, and then having a brisk game of the current favorite -- Monopoly.

Did I miss our "usual" eating sandwiches wrapped like gifts stuffed inside the special Christmas Eve Dinner stockings? Yes. Did they? Not for a minute. What did I enjoy? Being with the boys, not having any work to do, and a very special Christmas Eve.

Since then I tried to keep the celebrations varied so we wouldn't get so "hooked" on one certain thing, and I think in the long run it's been a good thing.

Try something different intentionally this year to stretch your "resilience" muscles, or try truly enjoying the "different" that's thrust upon you. It's your holiday to enjoy and it can take many shapes and still be meaningful.
