Yes, that's what "mistletoe" means. It comes from the Anglo-Saxon "mistel," which means "dung," and "tan," for "twig." This plant was long considered mystical because it was parasitic and stayed green throughout the cold northern winters without even being rooted in the ground.
Actually it's SEMI-parasitic, attaching its roots into the host plant to extract nutrients, and it's especially magical if this "host plant" should be an oak. Mistletoe attached to an oak was sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids.
The King Is Dead, Long Live The King
"Later," says our source, the University of Saskatchewan Botany Dept., "the ritual of cutting the mistletoe from the oak came to symbolize the emasculation of the old King by his successor." Ouch! It was considered both a sexual symbol, and as the "soul" of the oak.
During the Middle Ages, it was hung in ceilings to ward off evil spirits and placed over house and stable doors to prevent witches from entering. It was also believed to be able to put out fire. They thought it was delivered to the trees by lightning - ooo, electricity!
Which brings us to its favorite purpose: Kissing under the mistletoe was first associated with the Greek festival of Saturnalia and used for wedding blessing, dung being associated with "life-giving" powers (fertile-izer, you know).
Kiss 'N' Makeup
The Scandinavians gave it powers for making peace. Under the mistletoe warriors declared a truce, and warring spouses kissed and made-up.
And hey, Big Guy, if you want to get it right when you kiss that hotty under that twig of dung, pluck one of the berries. When the last berry is gone, no more kissing!
No more kissing, either, if you should eat that berry. Holly berries and all parts of the mistletoe are poisonous.
