When Hot Chocolate and Cookies Are Not Hot Chocolate and Cookies

Sometimes we think we see one thing-- we make trite comments like "Walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, has feathers like a duck = it's a duck" yet the more I travel through life, the more I see that things tend to not be what they seem at first glance.

I remember when I was a little girl and would play with the two sisters and their mother would give us snacks of hot chocolate and cookies.

With our stockinged feet swinging above the linoleum floor we would muse about life as only elementary schoolers can, relishing the precious hot chocolate with mini marshmallows.

Their house was so different than mine: children were only allowed to play in the basement. We took our shoes off as soon as we entered the door. We sat at the table like ladies when we ate our ritual afternoon snack.

It was the first place I ever ate cheesecake and yes, it was with hot chocolate. It was the first place I ever had a bakery birthday cake. It was the only household I knew that did not own a television set.

I loved the differences between my chaotic household and what I saw as a very "together" household. I was grateful for the time in a "different household culture."

I didn't learn until much later that underneath the crystal clear, carefully groomed outer touch was a puddle of discontent and fear and bruises which had to be hidden because of the alcoholism that was another fact of life for the two sisters and their mother.

We had the hiding part in common: an alcoholic father and an enabling mother. Their mother stopped the cycle long before mine did through divorce, another first in my young life. The father died drunk and alone.

On the other end of the spectrum, my father was reborn after he became sober.

At first glance, their home was shiny, tidy. No problems, no evidence of anything to the contrary to be seen by outside eyes. My childhood home was chaotically child focused, no evidence of anything to the contrary to be seen by outside eyes.

A simple deeper look would have discerned much, much more. As I continue to grow, I continue to look more deeply so that I can fine tune my discernment and draw my conclusions with both my heart and my intellect.
