"We give thanks for unknown blessings already on their way."
~ Ritual chant ~Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Since I've been a child, family love and connection is on the menu along with the traditional foods I love and associate with this time. I look forward all year to Thanksgiving as a time to reconnect with my far and wide family.
I feel fortunate to claim this privilege; where as my husband and many of my friends have a very different experience of family holiday time.
My mother, daughter and I have a tradition to cook up a feast that expresses our culinary creativity and fills the house with delicious aromas.
Alli and I begin combing through gourmet cooking magazines in September. My families search for cheap airline tickets usually starts in the summer, and we all get excited about being together.
But not this year. Due to circumstances beyond my control it was decided that travel was not possible. Thanksgiving was not going to happen in the way I love, and I felt disappointed and grumpy about it.
Somewhere in the middle of my self-imposed gloom, we received a gracious invitation from good friends to join them for the holiday. Although I appreciated the gesture (and my husband was delighted to accept) I was unable to transition and let go of my own expectations about how I would spend the day.
Nothing was going to be good enough. Not the right food, not my family, I would miss out on cooking with my daughter, and on and on--
Then, it hit me. I'd completely lost sight of what Thanksgiving was about. Thanksgiving's about GRATITUDE! Yes, I am incredibly grateful for my family and the fact that we look forward to being together-- and I realized there's so much more.
I was so caught up in my own expectations about what Thanksgiving SHOULD be I almost missed the opportunity to connect with something bigger. The enormous gratitude I feel for my life.
I invite you to stop for a minute and think about your relationship to Thanksgiving. It's so easy to get caught up in the trappings and miss the point. What are you grateful for? How might your day be richer, and more filled with love whatever the circumstances of your day?
Now, as I look forward to Thanksgiving Day I am genuinely excited about "unknown blessings already on their way". I know opportunities for richness and love await me as I celebrate this day of thanks.
