It had been one of those mornings.

I was literally festering with annoyance. The annoyance had become boil like, oozing with infectious ick, smelly and threatening to cause severe pain if I didn't take care of it ... pronto.

Sitting at a stop light, all I could think was "If those women weren't out there crossing the street, I could turn right on red but noooo .....there they are, right in my way and I bet they are there on purpose!"

At this point you are either nodding in recognition or you are aghast that these thoughts crossed a person's mind. I really hope it's the former. I don't often have these thought streams and when I do, I like to check into them further so instead of railing into myself for being so unenlightened, instead I let them be as I step into the next breath.

In this case, I realized these poor women were not interlopers along my path of the day, they were just women trying to get along with their path of life.

I figured since I was going nowhere fast I might as well share a smile with them.

Up went my lips as I exchanged a smile with the woman closest to me who was just wanted to cross the street. Her desire to cross had nothing to do with blocking my way. I kept reminding myself of this as my Mona Lisa plus a couple notches smile met hers.

Her eyes looked uncertain though her smile brightened her entire face speaking "Thank you" in its turned up inflection.

As I turned my head further left I noticed a man on a bicycle who almost missed his stop and nearly slammed his way into traffic. I breathed in deeply as he turned to cross the street in front of me.

I was no longer annoyed because of the smile exchange.

Still in the same physical spot, I noticed his deeply burnished red hair. Beautiful, thick and literally bursting with life. It was so much like Tom's my eyes responded by spontaneously filling with tears. Tom. Dead since April. Tom, with deeply burnished red hair that sang with vibrant vitality, oomph and laughter.

I sat, entranced, gazing at the man as his peddled his bicycle. I tried to recall ever touching Tom's hair. Maybe I playfully ruffled it or smoothed it down or touched it briefly during a shared hug or anything, ever at all? Did I ever touch his hair, which his wife Mel said swirled in the same way as their daughter's hair.

I don't think I ever did.

I watched the man pedal away as my light turned green.

My heart was filled with longing to visit my friends far and wide and put my hands in their hair. I wanted to notice the texture, see the patterns of growth, breathe in the scent, hear the song through a hair brush or comb and never again know that I never touched my friend's hair before his life slipped from the planet.

I was no longer annoyed by the inconvenience of not being able to turn right on red. Instead, I felt humbled -- blessed -- and invigorated by my heart beat.

Don't let time go by without touching, noticing, breathing in, looking with wonder at the essence and being of our loved ones. Listen to one another's song. Create context for meaningful connection in the simple and the mundane like crossing the street and being annoyed and allowing the annoyance to vaporize into incredible messages that invite you to a wider call to life.

Step beyond your fear of what people will think and into your highest expression. Don't let another moment go.
