Yes. I Agree Wholeheartedly
by Julie Jordan Scott

"There is a dignity in making art."
~ Julia Cameron ~

I sat at my desk, book in hand, wondering if that would ring an odd bell for you like it did for me.

Dignity and making art. Dignity and making art. Dignity and making art.

Such an intriguing assertion. Somehow I never really thought about art and dignity in the same breath. "It just didn't happen from the same place" came my unconscious belief, the knee-jerk response from the chattering inside my brain. I found myself completely lost, bewildered and wandering around in what I saw as "austerity" in the "dignity" rather than the opening that is created in considering these two -- until just this moment -- seemingly polar opposites.

Think about it.

To me, Dignified is a woman in the right outfit knowing the right people -- she staunchly wears the outfit and resolutely knows the people. She never wears white shoes beyond the "outlawed" time of year, her accessories always match perfectly. Her children are always impeccably dressed and her bed linens match her curtains which match her carefully arranged pillows which accent her clear as a bell eyes and nary-a-wrinkle-complexion.

Making art is throwing paint on the page, glomming through the cacophony to get to the beauty. Making art is unconventional, sings off key when it feels like it and is also incredibly present with no concern about calendars and dates and shoes and whether or not the children have the hair bow which matches the dress which matches the ruffle on the sock. Or does it mean that?

What about the color wheel as a partner in the creative process and what about the beauty within a harmonious orchestration? These are both familiar examples of "Dignity and Art".

I feel like I am getting closer.

What if? What if? What if shifted from dismissing the notion of "dignity and art" as fodder from one of my favorite writers in a confused moment and substituted the dismissal with creating space for dignity and art to be perfectly reasonable. What if I made it even bigger than that and decided dignity and art could even be: dare I say it? Divine.

Blend Dignity and Artfulness together and the result is divine, it is in sacred order, flowing and delightfully complete and whole.

Merriam Webster says "Dignity" is "worthy, honored, or esteemed." It's not simply those initial points I made about the "just-so" woman. Yes, she may be "dignified" according to some scales. Does she personify "Dignity"? She only does in a cartoonish sense rather than in a real life sense.

Dignity within the creative process elevates the experience for the artist as well as for audience. It is like putting the creative process on a well lit shelf in a place of honor. Admirers, learners, other creative people and children can come from near and far to learn from it. To watch it happen. To listen to its pulse with reverence.

People like me would carry notebooks and write about the feelings felt from being in its presence. Others would bring cameras and recorders and sketch pads and flutes in attempt to capture the essence of the Dignity and Art.

Yes, dear Julia Cameron, I once again agree with you wholeheartedly: "There is a dignity in making art."
