Fighting the Devastating Power of Those Early Lessons

You read these articles about someone who's got throat cancer who keeps puffing cigarettes through their breathing tube and you have to wonder. WHAT DOES IT TAKE?

Then you listen to someone younger talking, like I did the other day. She's 25. "How can people smoke?" she was asking me. "I quit last year when I ended up in intensive care with pneumonia during Cedar Fever season (a South Texas phenomenon)."

What's the difference? The first gentlemen had years of smoking habit built up and even the harshest lesson -- and probably a terminal one -- had no effect on him.

The earlier-learner, with much fewer years of experience in ALL areas, learned more quickly. She learned the lesson quickly and clearly, and got on with her life.

Plan For The New Year

Consider the habits in your life you need to break. You know, the things that make your life not work.

If your life is just not working and you don't know why, start by getting some coaching. You need clarity and that's what coaching is for.

Then look at that thing you keep doing that's messing up your life and consider when you first learned it. Chances are it was early in life.

Mary's Example

Mary had an intellectual and emotionally distant father who didn't pay attention to her. This is her 5th major relationship now and the pattern is repeating itself again: another intellectual, emotionally-distant man who doesn't pay attention to her.

TOM'S EXAMPLE

Tom had a critical, hysterical and emotionally unstable mother. He says, "Put me in a room with 25 women, 24 of whom are stable, mature, potentially excellent partners, and I'll find the 1 critical, hysterical and emotionally unstable one."

Malar's Example

Malar took her first job because she was "desperate" and she stayed in an abusive work situation for 3 years. Then she chose another dysfunctional work place. Then she chose another abusive manager.

Educate Yourself

Read a book like "Write a New Ending to Your Love Story" which can tell you more about how these patterns develop, so you can see how to break them.

Would this apply to a dysfunctional "work" or "career" problem? Absolutely because everything we're DOING is how we're BEING, and it's all formed early in life based on relationship patterns. You don't go to "work" and leave your "self" at home!

Connect The Dots

Part of living your life with emotional intelligence means being able to see patterns and learn new ways. Once you see the patterns and how they work, you can apply them over and over again to "the moments of your life."
